CAPITOL HILL. Neighborhood folks place laurels at the feet of this New American eatery, which is known almost as much for ambience as for its innovative menu. A handful of conservatively appointed tables dot the intimate dining room; soft lighting and professional, unobtrusive service complete the elegant scene. Featured dishes twist traditional American favorites, and the results include macaroni and cheese with lobster and Maple Leaf Farm duck with balsamic jus. Since seating is limited, reservations are a must.

2. Sushi Uokura

GOLDEN. Juxtaposing homespun charm and modern pizzazz, Sushi Uokura breaks out of the mold of typical sushi places. The restaurant is housed in a refurbished cottage and provides a comforting, if somewhat odd, backdrop to stellar sushi. Feast on noodle dishes, sukiyaki, and even steak, but don't forget the sushi. Yellowfin tuna, red snapper, salmon, and Spanish mackerel are cut precisely and crafted into superb rolls that you'll come to crave again and again.

DOWNTOWN. Depending on your mood when you reach Panzano, you can grab a table, choose a booth, or sit at the bar. No matter where you perch, you're sure to enjoy great northern Italian dishes prepared in an open kitchen. Homemade ravioli, spaghetti, and lasagna are traditional favorites, crafted with culinary precision. A nice wine list offers American and Italian vintages. Located adjacent to the Hotel Monaco.

NORTH DENVER. Wherever she goes, Peruvian pastry chef Yasmin Lozada-Hissom earns kudos for her unique and artful approach to dessert. Chocolate cake gets a lift from crunchy toffee bits and a sweet finish with crème frâiche gelato; the lowly strawberry shortcake gets a lovely twist with a brown sugar biscuit and a scoop of lime buttermilk-gelato. Dinner and brunch are wonderful, as well, but this is one place where you might want to consider starting with dessert!

SOUTH DENVER. A popular part of the South Denver scene, Budapest Bistro offers Hungarian cuisine in an intimate atmosphere (great for special occasions). Not sure if you like Hungarian food? Start with Shepherds Cheese Spread, a wonderful pairing of goat and cream cheeses topped with green onions, garlic, and savory herbs. For the main course, order Chicken Paprikas, a tender chicken dish smothered in sour cream sauce, served atop pasta dumplings, and alongside fresh veggies. Other options include goulash, schnitzels, and cabbage rolls. Near Washington Park.

NORTH DENVER. Café Brazil has been satisfying Denver's need for spicy Latin American food for more than a decade now. Smoked meats, fresh seafood, fried rice, savory sauces, and zesty spices take much of the credit for the menu's success. Notable dishes include arepas (corn cakes) and feijoada completa, a stew of beef and black beans. Consistent cooking and delightful presentation have made this North Denver restaurant a diner's paradise.

ARVADA. THIS BUSINESS IS CLOSED UNTIL JULY 24, 2007. According to locals who know good German and Czech food, Golden Europe rates right up there with the city's best restaurants. This family-run place offers a pleasant atmosphere, friendly service, and authentic dishes received favorably by critics. One bite of the schnitzel, and you're sure to be hooked as well.

CHERRY CREEK. A long-time standby, this Mexican restaurant really packs a punch with its tangy salsa, guacamole, and savory pork, chicken and beef tucked into soft tortillas. Self-service is the name of the game, and folks gather to enjoy the tasty fare, much of which features grilled ingredients. Casual atmosphere coupled with low prices makes Chez Jose a great value.

TECH CENTER. Deservedly famous for prime beef, Brook's has won numerous accolades from local food critics and from DiRoNa and Wine Spectator. The restaurant draws a high-powered professional crowd, not to mention a strong contingency of steak aficionados. Guests delve into massive porterhouses, double-cut lamb chops, perfect filet mignons, and succulent seafood. In addition, more than 1200 wines comprise the selection, and the staff is quite adept at recommendations.

LAKEWOOD. This small Lakewood trattoria is considered by many to be a hidden treasure, secreted away as it is in a nondescript strip mall. Inside, the cozy, family-style atmosphere beckons you to linger over savory pastas and enjoy a glass from the reasonable wine list. Start off with crusty mozzarella bread, and then order chicken breast topped with white wine cream sauce and a variety of cheeses. Seafood and even buffalo dishes also appear on the menu.
