DOWNTOWN. This expansive outdoor mall, accented with lush planters and graceful trees, features a wealth of retail and dining facilities and has helped to revitalize downtown Denver. The pedestrian-friendly thoroughfare is also convenient if you want to browse, since stores, hotels, restaurants, cafes, and entertainment venues lie in a concentrated stretch. Even so, the scope of the mall is quite large, spanning multiple city blocks. A complimentary shuttle service transports visitors from one end to the other. Interesting trivia nuggets: the mall was designed by architectural firm I.M. Pei and Associates, and if you look down you may notice that the granite blocks of the sidewalks are patterned to resemble Westen Diamondback rattlesnake skin.

MORRISON. Truly unique to the area, Red Rocks combines natural geological wonders with a stellar concert and event schedule. Come during the day for the best view of the red sandstone formations, over 250 million years old and 300 feet high. A moderate 1.4-mile trail loops around the area for the best views. Return in the evening to experience acoustic perfection as some of the biggest stars in music take the stage, including acts like Fleetwood Mac and Mariah Carey. A summer film series provides a change of pace when two bands perform before the screening of a classic movie.

DOWNTOWN. Denver Art Museum is highly regarded for its collection of Native American art, which includes over 16,000 pieces from more than 100 tribes across the US. The seven-story contemporary building also houses impressive displays of Pre-Columbian and Central American art and textiles, a fascinating Asian collection, and a fine assortment of modern American and European paintings. The Architecture, Design and Graphics galleries are notable as well. In 2006, the Frederic C. Hamilton Building, a craggy structure of steel and glass designed by renowned architect Daniel Libeskind, opened its doors across 13th Street from the original building. The building dramatically increases the museum's gallery and education space while redefining the Denver skyline.

Luxury and service are hallmarks of the Palace, which has hosted politicians, international dignitaries, and other celebrities over the years, including Presidents Eisenhower, Truman, Harding, and Wilson. If you can't stay at the Palace, the next best thing is to take a free tour; then enjoy afternoon tea or cocktails in the atrium. 241 rooms and suites. Valet parking only, $26.

CITY PARK. The much-loved Tattered Cover started out in the 1970s as a tiny independent book shop, but owner Joyce Meskis had a knack for bookselling, and expanded the store several times. Eventually, the "little independent bookstore that could" expanded to become one of the largest independents in the US. Now, with the Colfax location, the store has over 150,000 titles, 1800 periodicals, 150 newspapers (foreign and domestic), a coffee shop, and a large space for special events (of which there are many). The staff is genuinely friendly, intelligent, and helpful, no small feat for a retail enterprise with several hundred employees and three locations.

GOLDEN TRIANGLE. Pint's is a traditional British pub – with a twist. Although it boasts British memorabilia, gone are dim, wood-heavy interiors characteristic of England's finest establishments. Instead, you'll find bright colors, a vibrant mural, and photos of pubs in the UK. Home-brewed pale and light ales can be sampled from the drinks menu, which also offers a large selection of single malt scotches and single malt whiskeys. Burgers and fries (sprinkled with vinegar, of course) showcase the menu's respect for great pub fare.

NORTH DENVER. Café Brazil has been satisfying Denver's need for spicy Latin American food for more than a decade now. Smoked meats, fresh seafood, fried rice, savory sauces, and zesty spices take much of the credit for the menu's success. Notable dishes include arepas (corn cakes) and feijoada completa, a stew of beef and black beans. Consistent cooking and delightful presentation have made this North Denver restaurant a diner's paradise.

CHERRY CREEK. Denver's Bull & Bush mirrors Britain's best pubs, down to its cozy furnishings and characteristic memorabilia. Guests revel in the comfortable, dim interior as well as in the microwbrews, which flow freely and are apt complements to authentic plates of fish and chips.
