DOWNTOWN. Aspiring to the friendly bustle of a Parisian neighborhood bistro, this establishment in hip Larimer Square is quickly becoming a local favorite. For brunch, try citrus honey-drizzled French toast or a croque-monsieur (ham and cheese sandwich) with pomme frites along with a petit press of coffee; then, return for a dinner of bucatini pasta with seafood in saffron cream sauce, or a crispy pan-roasted chicken breast. A healthy selection of French wines, a pleasant patio for warm summer evenings, and a chocolate-heavy dessert menu increase the restaurant's cachet.

HIGHLANDS. Local artwork adorns exposed brick walls in this Highland Park area coffee shop. Regulars know it as a good place to order a fragrant coffee drink and a pastry and spend time catching up with old friends. Live music and poetry readings are often scheduled in the evenings, and books abound so you can peruse one of your favorites while sipping a steaming cup of hot chocolate and munching on a bagel. WASHINGTON PARK. Forget about counting calories when you step into this bake shop. Savor a divine pastry, cake, or tart from the double cream vanilla bean custard puffs, white chocolate and grapefruit tarts, and flourless hazelnut chocolate cakes that beckon from the spotless display case. Breakfast, brunch, or lunch (think egg dishes, salads, sandwiches, and pastas) can also be had. Afternoon tea is a cherished tradition, and patrons claim that freshly baked scones (served with cream, jam, and lemon curd) are true to their English counterparts and the best in town.

NORTH DENVER. Wherever she goes, Peruvian pastry chef Yasmin Lozada-Hissom earns kudos for her unique and artful approach to dessert. Chocolate cake gets a lift from crunchy toffee bits and a sweet finish with crème frâiche gelato; the lowly strawberry shortcake gets a lovely twist with a brown sugar biscuit and a scoop of lime buttermilk-gelato. Dinner and brunch are wonderful, as well, but this is one place where you might want to consider starting with dessert!

ARVADA. This bakery believes in doing things the old-fashioned way – from scratch. You won't find anything pre-packaged or processed, just sinfully delicious homemade goodies. Seven-layer tortes, hand-decorated cookies, and traditional layer cakes line the shelves, and German and European recipes are the specialty. (The kitchen has been perfecting them since 1963.) They even offer a full line of sugar-free and low-carb desserts.
