The best way to get inside this popular Vietnamese and Chinese restaurant is to park behind the building and enter via the back entrance. A Dong's periwinkle building and décor, including linoleum floors and vinyl upholstery, are unassuming, but the food is extraordinary. The cooking is authentic, and items such as the pho soup are accompanied with fresh accoutrements like bean sprouts and herbs that diners add on their own to further enhance the food's flavor. The restaurant is a favorite with the Des Moines Asian community.

This local café is hot – and even more popular on weekends. The Café Su menu features items like soup and dim sum for starters, as well as savory shrimp and vermicelli combinations for main entrées. Additional choices include shumai and, to drink, chrysanthemum tea. The décor is elegantly stylish and features blue and cream colored wainscot, tiled floors and modern artwork on the walls. The service is friendly and pleasant.

Pale terracotta and lime-green walls add to the Mediterranean ambience of this quaint eatery. Although located in a residential strip mall, Mosaix Restaurant and Wine Bar is well worth the drive to the west side of Des Moines. The food is exceptional and features appetizers such as crab cakes, Moroccan prawns, and escargot. Entrée choices include paella with scallops, mussels or shrimp, as well as Pesces Spada, which is an encrusted swordfish with calamata olives and pine nuts. Casual dress attire.
