SANTA ROSA BEACH. This funky coffee shop sports velvet-covered Victorian furniture, concrete floors and colorful local artwork. Friendly and relaxed, it sells coffee drinks of all flavors and varieties, along with teas, tropical drinks, beer and wine. Ice cream and shaved ice help combat the heat, and pastries and desserts provide a sugar fix any time of day. Light snacks are also available, as are milkshakes, sundaes and floats. Magazines, games and TVs help while away the afternoon, and free Internet access gives you the chance to check your e-mail or surf the net. At the patio tables, you can scope out beach traffic and satisfy your sweet tooth, too.

DESTIN. Refined and sophisticated, this classy establishment gleams with polished wood and stone. Its culinary emphasis is on seafood, steaks and wine, but the focus extends to spirits and cigars as well. Entrees include Maine lobster, swordfish, Atlantic salmon, Dover sole and steaks in a variety of cuts. Everything is prepared fresh when you order, and Steak Diane is assembled tableside. Premium cigars are available as well, and a decorative humidor made for the Shah of Iran is on display. Diners are often surprised by the quality of Seagar's offerings, but that's no reason for apprehension. On the contrary, each guest is welcomed and treated with the utmost graciousness.

Popular with families, the restaurant has selections for children and adults. If you just want a quick bite, Anglers also has an appetizer menu with nachos, salsa and chips, and buffalo wings. Full bar available upstairs.

MIRACLE STRIP PARKWAY. A simple wood-clad building belies the fact that this restaurant has been around since 1913. Family-owned and run, it has a casual atmosphere and is punctuated by family memorabilia, including framed medals and trophies. Although it's not fancy, it has a solid reputation, and everyone knows its name. A host of local seafood appears on the menu, including amberjack, trigger fish, flounder, scamp and snapper. Scallops, oysters, shrimp and lobster are also available, along with a number of seafood platters. The Skillet gathers yellow fin grouper, shrimp, scallops and crabmeat stuffing on one plate and is a house favorite. Chicken is also available, as are several cuts of Certified Angus Beef.

5. AJ's Seafood and Oyster Bar

DESTIN. AJ's is everyone's favorite place in Destin; the parking lot alone gives credence to that fact. The restaurant section of the complex, down by the harbor, is marked by a cascading water wall and fishing floats hanging overhead. The dining room gleams with varnished wood, and windows are open to the breezes and the view. Jimmy Buffett tunes play in the background. On the menu, seafood is prominent and is served grilled, fried and steamed. There's a selection of oysters as well, along with pasta dishes and a ribeye. The catch of the day, unloaded from the docks just outside of the restaurant, is guaranteed fresh. If you're in the area, make sure you give the place a try, but come early. No reservations are accepted.

6. Harbor Docks

DESTIN. Photos of proud fishermen bearing their catches cover the walls of this rustic establishment. Famous for its fresh seafood, Harbor Docks has several venues, including two hibachi tables, two bars and an upper deck. Entrees feature fried crab cakes, marinated yellowfin tuna and a seafood platter with the catch of the day and a variety of shellfish. All of these come with a salad and rice or potato. A substantial sushi menu offers sashimi, nigiri and maki selections, too. In the evenings, the deck is a popular destination for those who come to hear live bands play. As you might expect, the views from inside and outside are amazing.

7. McGuire's Irish Pub and Brewery

33 Hwy 98 E, Destin Harbor, Destin, FL 32541 · 850-650-0000

DESTIN. The first thing you notice when you step inside this brewpub is the thousands of dollar bills that hang like foliage from the ceiling. Signed by pleased patrons, they add extra green to the Irish memorabilia already on display. The restaurant's dark wood and brass accents aptly furnish a place where Irish folk music plays and beer is made on the premises. Pub fare, such as fish and chips, shepherd's pie, and corned beef and cabbage, will placate purists, but the menu also offers steaks, pastas, burgers and seafood for those who haven't been initiated into the pleasures of Irish cuisine. Try them with one of the house brews, which include a light, a red, a stout and even a non-alcoholic root beer.

8. Boathouse Oyster Bar

288-B Harbor Blvd E, Destin, FL 32541 · 850-837-3645

User Rating:  Rating: 5 / 5   (Rate It)

My Suitcase:   (Add to My Suitcase)

DESTIN. Unassuming and relaxed, this simple, waterside eatery doesn't buy into the commercialization found so frequently at beach resorts. It doesn't pretend to be fancy, and it doesn't expect its clientele to be either. Grafitti marks the walls, and physical comforts are at a minimum. It does, however, have a great view of the harbor and is known for its fresh, cold oysters. The cheeseburgers, huge and juicy, aren't too shabby either, and the gumbo is award-winning. Live music during the week adds an energetic note of local flavor.

9. Rick's Crab Trap

Located along the water beneath the FWB side of Brooks Bridge, this restaurant is well-known for its local seafood. Rough plank walls and draped fishing nets distinguish the interior, and nautical accents add bursts of color. The menu features fish prepared by steaming, grilling, broiling and frying. You'll find crabs of all varieties, oysters, crawfish, shrimp and mussels, along with amberjack and yellowfin tuna. A chicken dish and a hamburger are available for landlubbers, but the majority of the menu is devoted to seafood. Wine, beer and cocktails are served as well, and a number of specialty drinks will put you in the appropriate mood to enjoy Gulf Coast evenings.

10. Caffe Italia

189 Brooks Street, Fort Walton Beach, FL 32548 · 850-664-0035

User Rating:  Rating: 4 / 5   (Rate It)

MIRACLE STRIP PARKWAY. Twinkling with white lights, this restaurant resides in a large home beside the water. Offering both indoor and outdoor dining, Caffe Italia prepares classic Italian cuisine with only the best ingredients. The bistecca alla pizzaiola flavors beef tenderloin with a spicy sauce of tomatoes, capers, black olives and oregano, while the farfalle al salmone tops pasta with smoked salmon, peas and tomatoes in a white wine-vodka sauce. Along with these dishes, the menu offers selections of chicken, veal and pork. Pizzas are also popular; toppings include anchovies, prosciutto, green olives and roasted red peppers. Guests may enjoy live music Wed-Sun.
