FERNDALE. Distinguished by its light-filled, art-adorned dining room, this pleasant bistro specializes in dishes from southern Europe and the Middle East. It also features a wood-fired oven that's visible in its open kitchen. Introduce yourself to the menu with a meze platter or lentil pancakes with sherried wild mushrooms. Then, give yourself over to pappardelle with wild boar ragu, Moroccan-spiced braised duck legs, crispy-skinned branzini, or walnut- and pancetta-crusted Berkshire pork tenderloin with polenta and caramelized brussels sprouts. Add in a vintage from the carefully chosen wine list, and you've all you need for a terrific meal.

DOWNTOWN. Occupying a gracious building from the turn of the century, this accomplished restaurant mixes tradition and innovation to great effect. Its menu is also an amalgam, unifying flavors from around the globe and allowing them to transcend their usual roles. A strip loin steak enjoys a sake-ginger rub, and Colorado lamb shank gets a kick from shaved garlic chips and a pomegranate reduction. Even stuffed chicken breast is in for a shake-up with watermelon chutney and fried okra fritters. Atlas also serves a scrumptious weekend brunch.

ROYAL OAK. Large storefront windows look into Bastone's open, high-ceilinged space, which also features a dark-wood wainscot, comfortable booths, wooden floors, and a scattering of framed art. Modelled after a Belgian brasserie, the place offers familiars like pommes frites, mussels, and housemade pâté. Sandwiches, thin-crust pizzas, and salads appear, along with main courses like grilled hanger steak, herb-roasted chicken, and chicken waterzooi, a luscious stew. Accompanying them are a good wine list and a nice selection of ales and lagers brewed onsite.

DOWNTOWN DETROIT. If you're Belgian and feeling a little homesick (or even if you're not), Cadieux Cafe is just the fix you need. Home to big pots of steaming mussels and one of the area's best repertoires of imported ales, the homey cafe is a local favorite. The interior, like the menu, is distinctly Belgian as well, from the replica of "Manneken Pis" (the name explains the pose!) in the foyer to long, group-friendly wooden tables that get a little loud as the evening wears on. If you need to work off that last order of Creole mussels, strike up a little feather bowling in the adjacent alley. Make reservations first.

GREEKTOWN. Appropriately enough, this Greek restaurant is located in Greektown and benefits from the neighborhood ambience. For a touch of the dramatic, start with "Saganake Opa!" – flaming kasseri cheese – or "Loukaniko" – flaming sausage. Main-course specialties, then, include traditional favorites like moussaka, pastitso, and spanakopita. Lamb, beef, chicken, and seafood dishes are also featured.

GREEKTOWN. This Mediterranean gem, located along Greektown's primary drag, serves wonderful, traditional favorites like grilled lamb chops, moussaka, scordalia, dolmades, and baklava. The charming restaurant also boasts an admirable selection of imported beers (Mythos, anyone?) and Greek wines. Pegasus, widely regarded as one of the city's best places for Greek cuisine, tends to get packed on weekends and at lunchtime, so it's best to show up early if you don't want to wait.

Dine on traditional favorites like chicken tika saag, lamb biryani, and aloo gobi. Masala dosa also comes strongly recommended. Be sure to save room for their tantalizing sweets, because the dessert tray offers something delicious for everybody.

SOUTHFIELD. Boasting a global menu and one of Southfield's more refined environments, refreshing Sweet Lorraine's is a veritable gourmet haven. Eclectic decor and colorful walls play off Lorraine's diverse menu, which offers everything from Jamaican jerk chicken salad and French potpie to grilled steaks and maple-cured Atlantic salmon. Be sure to save room for a delectable dessert offering – a cup of potent Spanish coffee or perhaps the Hazelnut Heater (Bailey's, Kahlua, Frangelico, and a dab of coffee). Great breakfast offerings too.

WEST BLOOMFIELD. Specializing in Russian cuisine and the traditions of eastern European cookery, The Fiddler has at its helm a native Russian son. He shares his love of dishes like gefilte fish, latkes, stuffed cabbage, borscht, blini, and strudel, exhibiting them in all their homemade goodness. Everything is prepared fresh on the premises, although allowances are made to lighten the heaviness that historically came from fat and oil. Intensifying the dining experience is the satisfying presence of live music.

WINDSOR. A narrow, bistro-like space with brick half-walls, large-scale artwork, wooden floors, and a double row of pendant lights is the setting for Three. Dedicated to the small plates concept, the restaurant invites diners to nibble – hopefully, with friends – on countless dishes. The menu puts forth options like lamb chops, spring rolls, tempura vegetables, miso soup, and salmon. Order a selection individually, or better yet, go for a "plato," a shareable assortment of a half-dozen or so options. Desserts and wines also get the multiple-sized treatment.
