BIRMINGHAM. Located in Birmingham's historic train station, this rustic restaurant looks and feels more like Wyoming than Michigan, thanks to dark wood flooring, Native American artwork, and more than a few stuffed animals. Big Rock's menu includes flavorful game dishes, from elk and moose to bear and venison. Also known for its terrific home-brewed beer, Big Rock is a favorite after-work spot with local business types, who adore the cozy, cigar-friendly cocktail lounge located on the second level. During warmer months, the terrace is a prime place to enjoy a meal.

DOWNTOWN. Intricate walls of wood that are practically art installations distinguish this celebrated, pricey enterprise. The classy interior is an apt tie-in to Mina's satisfying cuisine, which shows attention to detail in every bite. Beef is showcased in everything from an American Kobe burger to Piedmontese cuts, and sizes range from a 6-oz. NY strip to a 30-oz. porterhouse, giving folks of all appetites something to choose from. Fresh fish and shellfish are also excellent, as are sides like truffled mac & cheese and herbed duck fat fries.

DOWNTOWN. Elegant, subdued, and contemporary, Coach Insignia keeps the decor low-key to highlight astounding views of the city and of Canada. It's an expense account-loving restaurant, but it's one you should definitely try to experience. Service and wines are stellar, and the food is extraordinary. Innovative dishes include appetizers like Maine lobster corn dogs and a short rib martini. Main courses range from Georges Bank scallops to cumin- and coriander-rubbed big eye tuna, venison to duck breast, and a 14-oz. New York strip to Kurobuta pork loin. An all-around excellent choice.

DEARBORN. Few would debate that this Dearborn classic serves some of the best red meat in the area. A traditional American steakhouse with cozy leather booths, soft lighting, and distinctive supper club feel, Kiernan's is family-friendly both in menu and price. The restaurant's top dishes are, of course, mouthwatering steaks; however, the menu also features a range of delicous seafood and veal dishes.

SOUTHFIELD. Morton's is an upscale chain steakhouse that serves a lot more than just American Angus. The atmosphere is classy, so expect to be treated well by the friendly waitstaff, who present the night's menu by bringing out a cart and sharing tales about each dish. Entrée favorites include blackened swordfish, fresh Maine lobster, and a Gibraltar-sized 24-oz. porterhouse.

NOVI. Elegant and with a more contemporary edge than most steakhouses, No. VI Chophouse is an atmospheric place ideal for impressing clients or dates. Serving only USDA Prime beef, broiled to perfection, the restaurant takes great pride in its menu. From a 7-oz. filet mignon to a 20-oz. porterhouse, steaks are top-quality, and overall options are broad: lamb pot au feu, pork tenderloin, grilled ahi, and broiled lobster tails. The cocktail lounge adds another dimension to an upscale evening out.

ROCHESTER. A good option for a special occasion, Rochester Chop House is just as skilled with seafood as it is with steaks. If you're going for the former, the lobster-and-shrimp panroast is wonderful, as is salmon Lawrence, with its splash of saffron cream and asparagus side. If beef is your choice, go light with a 6-oz. tenderloin, or treat yourself to a 22-oz. bone-in rib-eye. You might even try it encrusted with Maytag bleu cheese or dressed with a signature zip sauce, a zesty, spice-packed concoction that stands up to good beef and is a local necessity. Other hearty possibilities? A veal chop, a Delmonico, or roasted rack of lamb.

TROY. The name is well-known, and the quality of the meat served at Ruth's Chris is undoubtedly top-quality. USDA prime and choice steaks served sizzling and sputtering on an ultra hot plate come with side items large enough to share – these are Ruth's Chris's specialties. Veal, chicken, lobster, and salmon also grace the menu and are equally as pleasing. Diners enjoy pleasant service, a variety of menu options, and an unpretentious yet upscale environment. Appetizers like carpaccio tenderloin or sizzlin blue crab cakes are great ways to start, and desserts like chocolate praline encore and chocolate chunk bread pudding provide complete and total closure.

BINGHAM FARMS. A good bet for its clean, sophisticated environs, able staff, and great wine list, Shiraz easily caters to all comers. Its culinary concept – "USDA Prime steaks, Asian inspired seafood" – is a little unusual, but everything works together to present a terrific, full-flavored menu. Beef tournedoes are accompanied by truffled chive dauphinoise potatoes, while other cuts, including a 14-oz. Delmonico, can be topped with anything from a bearnaise sauce to the locally popular zip sauce. Shiraz classics include sauteed calves liver, braised lamb cassoulet, and "the Shiraz signature," a grilled filet mignon served with butter-poached lobster tail.

A classic American steakhouse, this Troy treasure is a favorite with the Motor City's "in" crowd, and it's not uncommon to find the place crowded with big-time execs, politicians, and celebrities. Atmosphere and decor are reminiscent of a traditional dinner club, complete with mahogany booths and tables, subdued lighting, dark-paneled walls, comfy leather furnishings, and a wine cellar with more than 5,000 Californian, Chilean, French, and Italian vintages. House specialties include a mammoth, 24-oz. dry-aged porterhouse, steak au poivre with cognac cream sauce, and a 20-oz. Delmonico. Alternatively, fish and seafood are widely regarded as some of the best in town, and grilled Norwegian salmon with dill mayonnaise and fresh Maine lobster lead the way.
