DOVER. Set in the historic John Bullen House (1775), Delaware Made General Store gives out-of-towners a glimpse of 19th- and early 20th-century small-town America. The store's specialty, of course, is promoting Delaware artists and craftspeople, who produce original paintings and sculptures, hand-woven baskets and hand-brushed crocks. In addition to its wares, the friendly shop serves as an information center for travelers looking to schedule a tour, find a hotel or learn more about Dover.

DOVER. When it comes to modern fashion, the capital city browses mostly at its signature shopping destination, Dover Mall. This enclosed retail center is anchored by Sears, JCPenney, Macy's and Boscov's; in addition to these department stores, it features a number of specialty shops like Aeropostale, Victoria's Secret and Lane Bryant. If the legs grow weary of popping in and out of stores, visit the "in-house eateries" for a fresh-baked cookie or a chicken sandwich. If further relaxing is needed, take in a movie at the 14-screen Carmike Cinema.

DOVER. Intimate, charming, old-fashioned – each of these adjectives accurately describes Dover's historic downtown area. It's here that Spence's Bazaar operates, providing a firsthand glimpse of what trade and commerce were like in the "good old days." After visiting the Bazaar, make your way to Bradford Street, where lovely 19th-century Victorians now house quaint boutiques. Meanwhile, the area around The Plaza and extending up State Street offers a plethora of small, locally owned shops that specialize in everything from comic books to fine art.
