Biggs, an avid art collector, generously opened his collection of rare and fine art to the public. Biggs' donation includes Impressionist paintings by William Merritt Chase, sculpture by Charles Parks and even rare 18th-century furniture. Other galleries focus on family portraits, landscapes representing the Hudson River Valley School and works by local artists.

This 15,000-acre wildlife reserve features wide expanses of unspoiled tidal salt marsh (one of the largest such areas in the US) as well as biomes ranging from timber swamps to grassy uplands. Established in 1937 as a primary stopping point for migratory birds, Bombay Hook sees an unbelievable number of winged passers-through during early fall and spring months, including snow geese and black-necked stilts.

DOVER. Located in a historic building (1880) that formerly housed the Presbyterian Sunday School, this museum provides an accurate glimpse of life in Dover prior to 1900. An original stained glass window signed by William Reith hangs from the rear wall of the building, and the museum is arranged to resemble a 19th-century main street. In the print shop exhibit, you'll find a Pearl printing press that dates from 1897 and is still used to create maps and brochures for sale in the gift shop. Other areas re-create a pharmacy, a general store and a post office.

DOVER. One of Dover's oldest standing public buildings, the Delaware State House was constructed in 1792 and, thanks to a massive restoration program in the 1970s, looks much as it did when politicians first chatted under its gilt ceiling. Guided interpretive tours include stops by the courtroom, the legislative chambers and the Recorder of Deeds office, where former slaves filed freedom papers. Group tours require a reservation.

DOVER. The area's largest attraction, Dover Downs, is a figurative and literal playground for adults. Open daily, Dover Downs Slots is a nicotine-free casino that's home to some 2500 state-of-the-art nickel, quarter and half-dollar "one-armed bandits." Try your hand (and your luck) at Liberty Ball, Wild Taxi or Diamonds and Devils. Once you've had your go in the casino, you may want to check out the goings-on at the track. That's right: 140,000-seat Dover International Speedway, in addition to staging two major NASCAR events, hosts harness racing each year from October to April.

DOVER. This beautiful example of 18th-century Georgian architecture was home to one of Delaware's most noted statesmen, Attorney John Dickinson, whose participation in the Stamp Act Congress of 1765 and authorship of "Letters of a Farmer in Pennsylvania" (1767) earned him popular appeal and made him a key player in the colonies' quest for independence. Visitors to the plantation receive a truly authentic experience, and great care and research ensure that the home's staff looks, sounds and acts as if they had lived some 200 years ago. An on-site store carries everything from quill-and-ink sets to handmade candles.

DOVER. Though born in Wilmington, E.R. Johnson always considered himself a son of Dover, and this museum pays tribute to him, his inventiveness and his business savvy. Johnson's ingenuity led him to create a compact phonograph that was all the rage in American households in the early 1900s. The Victrola Museum, made possible by the State of Delaware and Johnson's own family, includes in its collection antique phonographs designed by the Victor Talking Machine Company, Johnson's personal album collection, old photographs of famous singers recorded by the Victor Company and a few interactive exhibits.

DOVER. Constructed in 1904, Dover Opera House was once the center of the capital city's arts and entertainment scene. In 1923, owner George M. Schwartz transformed the facility into a movie theater, and it remained more or less the same until its doors closed in 1982. Fortunately, concerned civic groups realized the importance and potential of the theater, and after much expansion and updating, it re-opened in 2001 as the Schwartz Center. Today, the center seamlessly combines old-fashioned intimacy and warmth with modern light, sound and projection systems. Once again the pride of downtown, the Schwartz Center is home to the acclaimed Dover Symphony Orchestra and hosts a wide repertoire of performances and shows throughout the year.
