This expansive castle in the heart of the old city served as the royal residence for Saxon leaders from the 1200s through the fall of the empire after World War I. As a home to royalty, this building underwent many changes over the years, and those changes are reflected in the combination of architectural styles. Despite being destroyed at the end of World War II, the castle has today been rebuilt and stands as one of the most beautiful buildings in East Germany.
