Possibly the most famous historic building in Dresden, the Semper Opera House – named for its famed architect – boasts a storied history of destruction and reconstruction. Opening in 1841, this Italian Renaissance-style building was destroyed by fire in 1869, and rebuilt in 1878. During World War II, it was almost completely destroyed and after being painstakingly restored, it reopened in 1985. Today the Semperoper remains a symbol of Dresden's beauty and resilience. Within it's walls the music program spans classic operas to contemporary recitals and jazz.
