Not merely a building but a complex of interconnected structures, the Zwinger was built in the early 18th century by Augustus the Strong as a home for his concubines. The building – one of the most popular in Dresden – was also the site of athletic tournaments. Within the buildings are formal gardens, fountains, and promenades. Several state museums are housed here, the most famous being the Porcelain Museum and the Armoury Museum, with its displays of historic weaponry. Visitors to this architectural masterpiece could spend hours absorbing the rich beauty and regional history on display.
