Despite a few identity crises in past years, the Apartment has managed to return to the top of the "exclusive nightclubs" roster. Two separate spaces appeal to those who prefer to chill out with a martini as well as those who would rather throw down on the dance floor. Depending on the night, you might find DJs spinning funky house, 80s hits or contemporary dance music. Dress your trendy best; designer jeans and trainers are permitted.

This classy venue (think French Renaissance-meets-Baroque, if you can) brings more than a dash of Parisian chic to the club scene. A firm favorite of the swankier demographic of the Lebanese community, this is a dressy place that keeps things fresh with a succession of theme nights throughout the week. If you're lucky enough to have two X chromosomes, think about checking out Boudoir on a Tuesday - ladies drink free champagne all evening!

GARHOUD. Dubai's famous Irish Village recreates the look, feel and charm of a traditional pub, easily making it a favorite watering hole among expats. The pub grub is just as it ought to be, simple and hearty. Outdoor seating gets packed in winter. Small wonder: few things in life compare to downing a stout under the surreal desert twilight. The Village is hosting more live acts these days, everyone from Bob Geldof to Chrissie Hynde, and it's predictably standing room only on St Patrick's Day.

JUMEIRAH. A trendy nightclub boasting authentic Arabic-style decor and an eclectic selection of live music and traditional dance. The brightly hued Kasbar raises three levels, the upper two of which boast ornate terraces that overlook the oft-oscillating crowded dance floor. A favorite with locals and expats alike, the nightclub features some of Dubai's best DJs – the types of guys who know how to make the party last long into the night by spinning the scintillating club, house, techno and Arabic pop hits.

Sometimes, the carefully designed clubs fall into that "all style and no substance" trap. Not so, Lotus One. On the one hand is the decor – this is about as contemporary as it gets, with leather couches, hardwood floors, chairs suspended from the ceiling, mood enhancing light effects, and even a small stream visible through a glass "window" in the floor. On the other hand, they have surprisingly good pan-Asian food, an eclectic array of cocktails and awesome music. It manages to be comfortable and cutting-edge, all at once. Highly recommended.

The Grand Hyatt really pulls out the stops with this vast 'superclub', which operates on three floors. The Dance Club on the lowest level can hold a cool 900 people, and things chill out as you ascend. Mix also boasts a chic lounge on the mezzanine level with a separate DJ and – get this – a soundproofed bar upstairs. This is absolutely the place if you want to let rip in style.

The Peppermint, with its discreet – not to say easily missed – side-of-hotel entrance and distinctive vibe, has a genuinely exclusive feel. Throughout the year a steady stream of big name DJs is attracted here, because it means something to have a gig at the Peppermint's Barajeel Ballroom on their résumé. The only drawbacks are the real possibility of snaking queues, particularly on weekends, and the certainty that unaccompanied males will be denied entrance.

BUR DUBAI. Sometimes multiple personalities are a good thing. Take Rock Bottom Café, for instance. Throughout the day, it's a family-friendly, American-style restaurant with casual 70s-era décor. As night falls, DJs and house bands get the partiers dancing (the Bullfrogs help!). And on Saturdays and Sundays, football becomes the center of attention as the bar fires up its numerous plasma and huge projection screen TVS. There's something here for just about everyone!

Arguably the city's premier club, the Moroccan-style Trilogy scores big on the name-DJ scale. Seb Fontaine has been known to swing by, and you can see why he makes the effort. This is another club that's split into three levels: revelers party downstairs in the Main Room while wannabe mixers can hit the decks in the Studio. Those looking to cool down or get to know a new friend merely have to make for the open-air Rooftop.

Popular, but not uncomfortably packed with revelers, Zinc seems to attract a fair number of flight crew members who appreciate the laid-back atmosphere. It's a dance club, to be sure, with the requisite stylish industrial-type décor, but the vibe is casual and not at all snooty. DJs spin popular dance tunes and some house and techno – nothing too daring or obscure. If you're looking for someplace upbeat but perhaps still a bit anonymous, give Zinc a try.
