DULUTH.
One of the area's most recognizable Duluth sights, Aerial Lift Bridge was completed in 1930, providing Duluth residents with road access to narrow Minnesota Point. The bridge, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, actually opened in 1905 as an aerial transfer bridge and was inspired by one in Rouen, France. In 1929, traffic demands required removal of the bridge's massive gondola and a near-complete redesign. Specifically, its high towers were reinforced to withstand the pressure and weight necessary to lift the entire span skyward and allow vessels to easily pass underneath. Today, Duluth's rare Aerial Lift Bridge is a testament to early 20th-century engineering ingenuity.
