DULUTH.   This memorial tells the story of three young African-Americans, Elias Clayton, Elmer Jackson, and Isaac McGhie who were lynched by a mob of thousands in downtown Duluth for allegedly raping a local woman. Later, information surfaced that revealed all three men were innocent of the crime. Today, this memorial plaza at the corner of Second Avenue East and First Street remembers the tragedy of that night. Engraved throughout the plaza are quotes by famous scholars and historical persons, including the words "Atonement, Compassion and Respect," which appear on the memorial's main walkway.   (© 10Best)
