Overview
Dumfries is a mythical land cradled away in the southwest corner of Scotland between the English border and the Irish Sea. With a romantic backdrop of misty lochs and thick woodlands, Dumfries was recently named the town with the "best quality of life" in the British Isles. Indeed, the pace is as deliberate as a trickling stream. Dumfries (along with its neighbor Galloway) has cast a spell over writers and artists. The poet Robert Burns lived here, as did James Barrie, who created of "Peter Pan." Famous English writers, including William Wordsworth, often sojourned here as well. Captivating sites also abound. Check out the medieval Castle Douglas, the tranquil Threave Gardens, and the picturesque Galloway Forest Park. Linksters can play over thirty championship golf courses. And the stout of heart can hike the scenic 212-mile Southern Upland Way.
