  1. Dundee is the fourth largest city in Scotland and is famous for its cake and marmalade. However, the famous Keiller Jam Factory was taken over in 1988 and production moved back to England.
  2. Ships Ahoy! Dundee was a major shipbuilding center during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The Discovery, which is Captain Scott's polar research ship, is still moored in the city today!
  3. At one time there were more millionaires per head in Dundee than anywhere else in Britain. Today, however, the city has one of the highest unemployment rates in Scotland.
  4. Despite the fact that Dundee could have been planned better and is not the most beautiful city, the city does have one shining aspect – its people! Dundonians are among the most hospitable and entertaining in all of Scotland!
  5. It's no joke but it is comical. The city's largest employer is D.C. Thomas, a publisher of famous comics like the popular "Beano".
  6. The Railway Bridge is just over two miles long and still remains the largest in Europe. The section closest to Dundee was completed in 1887. It was built to replace a section that was destroyed in 1879 by a storm.
  7. Dundee maintains a spectacular position on the Tay Estuary and is dominated by a dormant volcano called the Law. The volcano is the highest point in the city. A hike to the top provides a great view over the city.
  8. The Howff Burial Ground is a historic graveyard given to the people of Dundee by Mary Queen of Scots. The carved gravestones, which date back to the sixteenth century, feature the signs and symbols of the old craft guilds.
  9. Glamis Castle lies just twelve miles north of Dundee. The castle, pronounced "glarms," was the legendary setting for Shakespeare's Macbeth. The five-story, L-shaped castle has been a royal residence since 1372. Today, it is home to the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne.
  10. Verdant Works is an award-winning site that you should not miss. The former jute mill tells the story of Dundee's important jute and textiles history. At one time there were as many as 43,000 people employed in the textiles industry in Dundee.
