This Durham museum and historic site is where Confederate Gen. Joseph E. Johnston and Union Gen. William T. Sherman signed surrender papers for the Southern Armies resulting in the biggest troop surrender of the Civil War. The site includes self-guided and guided tours focusing on the reconstructed farmhouse. The visitor center includes exhibits on the Bennett family, the Civil War and the surrender. There is a video, “Dawn of Peace,” which is shown every hour. You can also bring your lunch to picnic and enjoy a fun Durham activity outdoors.
