Follow the course of the Chippewa River as it flows through the heart Eau Claire thanks to this multi-purpose trail network, which is open to cross-country skiers, bikers, in-line skaters, hikers, and joggers. North of Eau Claire, the Old Abe State Trail, a paved trail set in an old railroad grade, leads from Cornell to Chippewa Falls. Meanwhile, the Red Cedar State Trail spurs off the main route for some 37 miles and ends in Menomonie, along the way passing through small riverside villages, high woodland bluffs, the Dunnville Wildlife Area, and Downsville's Cut Stone Quarry. Interested parties may pick up trail passes and maps at the Eau Claire Visitor Center (3625 Gateway Drive). Eventually, all three trails will be connected, giving outdoor enthusiasts more than 70 miles of scenic pathways.
