This 24,000 acre park encompasses almost all of the Chihuahuan Desert Mountain Range and features the 7192-foot North Franklin Peak. There are several hiking trails that wind their way around caves and springs. Be sure to drive up Trans Mountain Road to experience some of the best views in the area. Camping available.   (© 10Best)

Be sure to view "Elephant Rock" on the West side of the Franklins. It can be viewed most easily from the last scenic overlook near the very top as you head from the West side to the Northeast side. It looks more like a Woolly Mammoth toiling up the side of the mountain, (headed to the East side) with its trunk rising up in front of it. This, along with the Coronado Thunderbird (a large deposit of red rock also found on the Western slopes) should qualify as the "Largest Animals in Texas". Be sure to take a camera, and wonder along with me why El Paso doesn't publicize Elephant Rock.
