Located in Kane County, Elgin offers visitors cultural diversity that ranges from local choral group the Heartland Voices, to the Ballet Folklorico Huehuecoyotl, a traditional Mexican dance troupe. Elgin grew up along the Fox River and is considered part of the greater Chicago area (the Windy City is about 40 miles away). Elgin's historic district is listed on the National Register and showcases over 600 items, each listed for its historic significance. Now home to a population of roughly 95,000 residents, Elgin has a charming steeple skyline. One place to put on your itinerary is the Fox River Trolley Museum, which exhibits historic railway cars. Be sure to make time to ride the trolley, a 30-minute expedition that features the Fox River's scenic beauty. The Historical Radio Museum is also worth a visit. Other interesting tidbits: several of the families in Elgin's growing Latin community trace their lineage back to the same Puerto Rican town, and the early 1990's movie, Hoffa, was filmed here.
