Enniskillen Guide » More About Enniskillen: Overview
Overview
The ancient town of Enniskillen is an island carefully guarded by the Lough Erne waterway that surrounds it. Enniskillen is by far the largest city in the densely wooded county of Fermanagh, a scenic region that boasts a number of outdoor recreational activities, including fishing and golf. The center of town offers interesting sites, including the medieval Enniskillen Castle, which houses The Regimental Museum, and The Watergate History and Heritage Center. Other points of interest in the city are the neo-classical Castle Coole, the eighteenth century Florence Court, the limestone Marble Arch Caves, and the numerous, age-old burial grounds dotting the countryside. Tourists can also explore some 200 small islands in Lough Erne as well. Devenish Island, an old monastic settlement dating back to the sixth century, lies just two miles downstream from Enniskillen.
