More about Exeter
Affectionately known as the "Cathedral City," Exeter was settled by the Romans in the first century. Remnants from the Roman times, such as the City Walls and the Exeter Underground Passages, are still intact in several locations. Visitors flock to this city on the Exe to see not only the Roman remains, but also the towering Exeter Cathedral, some of which dates from the eleventh century. Exeter also lays claim to the favorite haunts of some of England's great Elizabethan characters – Sir Francis Drake and Walter Raleigh were quite fond of Mol's Coffee House on the Cathedral Close. However, there is more to do in Exeter than visit the past. The Quay area offers some of the best dining and shopping destinations in Devon. If you are a nature lover, Exeter's countryside features a unique landscape of oak, ash, and hazel forestland that offers excellent excursions. The nearby Dunsford Reserve is part of the area wildlife trust and features superb hiking trails along a scenic river.
