WEST ACRES. The year was 1961, and the New York Yankees' beloved Mickey Mantle had launched an all-out assault on Babe Ruth's hallowed, single-season homerun record. However, fans around the country would come to learn that another Yankee, the unassuming Roger Maris, was also challenging Ruth's mark. In fact, it was Maris who heroically surpassed the Sultan of Swat in record books, establishing a mark that would stand for nearly 40 years. North Dakota-native Maris and his career achievements are honored at this museum, located at West Acres Mall. Here, visitors find exhibits on the famed Summer of '61, as well as baseball gear and personal effects belonging to Fargo's half of the famed M & M Boys.
