DOWNTOWN. Maintained by the Washington County Historical Society, the white, two-level home at 230 West Center is the oldest standing house in the city of Fayetteville. Interestingly enough, the original structure, built in 1836, was actually one story and constructed almost entirely of native logs. In 1839, the widow and children of Cherokee leader John Ridge sought refuge here after he was assassinated for agreeing via the Treaty of New Echota to move his people from their native Georgia to Oklahoma – a treaty that ultimately resulted in the Trails of Tears. Contact the Washington County Historical Society for information about tours and programs, lasting from 35 minutes to 2 hours.
