UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS. Founded as a land-grant institution in 1871, the University of Arkansas stands as one the South's leading public universities in terms of scientific, technological, and creative accomplishments. The school's beautiful, tree-lined campus is flanked to the south by the Ozarks and covers some 300-plus acres. Prominent alum and faculty include Sam Walton (founder of Wal-Mart), President Bill Clinton, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, and J. William Fulbright (a US Senator and founder of the Fulbright Scholarship Program). In addition, the Razorback athletic teams draw on a hugely loyal fan base, and it's not uncommon to find the city of Fayetteville nearly double in population on a home football Saturday. Campus tours are available.
