FLAGSTAFF. Once a privately-owned cattle ranch, this 200-acre complex was donated and endowed by the land's most recent owner, Frances McAllister, in the 1980s. At an elevation of 7150 feet, the gardens receive little water and have a short growing season. The particular types of plants that can adapt to such conditions are the arboretum's focus. More than 2500 species can be examined, and various trails lead visitors through the grounds. Programs included in the admission are a winter Hawk Walk in March and every day from April through October you can get up close and personal with hawks, owls, falcons and other raptors during the Live Birds of Prey demonstrations. A visitors center, greenhouse, pond, and gift shop are available, along with themed gardens, guided tours, and gardening seminars. Fun and educational for the whole family. Great views too.
