9. Mormon Lake Lodge & Steakhouse

MORMON LAKE.   Farming and ranching implements adorn this timeworn establishment, which first opened in 1924. Meats and seafood are grilled over mesquite wood, and the earthy goodness is an incredible, aromatic draw. Prime cuts of steak figure prominently on the menu, along with pork, ribs, quail, chicken, trout, and game. Hearty side dishes round out the meal, and you'll want to lean back and loosen your belt a notch when you're done. The adjacent saloon offers alcoholic beverages and live weekend entertainment. We stopped in Mormon Lake on our way to Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon. The Lodge has the best food for the money anywhere in Arizona. They have friendly servers and a laid back atmosphere in the Lodge. We plan on stopping back to spend a night or two in their cabins next time we're in northern Arizona.
