More about Fort Dodge

Fort Dodge, located on the Des Moines River in north-central Iowa, feels smaller than its 25,000 population warrants. A wilderness fort – Fort Dodge – was built on the site in 1850, and twenty years later the fledgling settlement cashed in when gypsum mines were opened to tap the area's abundant resources. In fact, Fort Dodge is still known as "The Gypsum City." Like their frontier forebears, Fort Dodge's 25,000 residents embrace an active, vigorous lifestyle – the area boasts over 900 acres of public parks. Organized municipal volleyball, baseball, basketball and tennis teams are popular diversions for adults as well as children. Some of the parks offer overnight camping in rustic cabins or tents. A skateboard park, a Frisbee golf course, a butterfly garden and a model airplane field are some of the city's more unique offerings. Almost every park in the system has a nature trail or a walking trail, and joggers, bikers, inline skaters and cross-country skiers are common sights. Not all of Fort Dodge's attractions are land-based; the Des Moines River is the perfect place to fish, canoe and swim.
