EAST FORT LAUDERDALE. No question about it, this enchanting waterfront steakhouse exudes luxury. Located in the Hyatt, Grill 66 offers balcony dining that overlooks the Intracoastal Waterway. The menu offers popular appetizers such as crispy shrimp and calamari, filet mignon carpaccio, and a charcuterie platter. Main course offerings include lobster, crab cakes, veal and lamb chops in case a strip steak, filet mignon or porterhouse doesn't do the trick. Artfully prepared potatoes and green veggies provide a satisfying accompaniments to the meat.

LAUDERDALE-BY-THE-SEA. This waterside restaurant offers Caribbean-inspired seafood dishes in a festive environment, with panoramic views of the Intercoastal Waterway from the elegant Art Deco dining room or from the breezy outdoor dock. Upscale dishes include baked prosciutto wrapped brie, shiitake mushroom crusted halibut with wilted Swiss chard, grilled salmon and crab stuffed portobello, or lump crab and corn roasted grouper. Desserts are extravagant. Try the Icky Sticky Caramel Tart with Chunky Monkey ice cream. Reservations requested.

LAS OLAS. Enjoy a waterfront view from the patio of this delightful Northern Italian bistro. The meal begins with a loaf of garlic bread, and salads such as pears on arugula or the Fantasia (apples, walnuts and gorgonzola) are highly recommended. Pastas are available in both appetizer and dinner portions, and main course specialties include the hearty grilled lambchops and baked whole fish, flavored with garlic, sage and rosemary. A wide selection of wine is available to complement your meal. NB Lunch is served Monday-Saturday.

DOWNTOWN. Located along the New River in a historic early 20th century home, this restaurant features a two-story balcony and patio across the front of the house. While the picturesque waterfront setting's the primary attraction, diners also enjoy noteworthy New American cuisine. Crawfish potpie and wild mushroom tartlet highlight the appetizers while main course offerings include Thai pork chops with pistachio wild rice, coconut-mushroom sauce and stir fry vegetables. Sunday brunch includes a buffet, omelet and meat carving stations, raw bar and fabulous Bloody Marys. Prix-fixe and pre-theatre menus are available in the summer. Live music is featured Thursday-Saturday nights, and brunch during the summer months includes live jazz.

Tasty appetizers such as barbecued shrimp, lobster cocktail and onion soup complement the succulent steaks. In addition to a variety of cuts of beef, dishes such as pistachio crusted grouper, lamb loin chops and Australian lobster tails appear on the menu. Looking for an especially sound way to start your day? Stop by for breakfast before heading out. NB If the hotel is full, Shula's offers a great buffet for just under $17.

EAST FORT LAUDERDALE. This Key West original branches out and continues to serve the best sloppy joe sandwiches around. Not only do you get great food but you also get the best ocean view in the city from their spot in the Beach Place shopping center. Walk in and you are transported to Key West, with a festive air and frequent live music. If the original sloppy joe isn't your taste, try one of their huge burgers or chicken....it's all great.

EAST FORT LAUDERDALE. Located in the Atlantic Hotel, this restaurant and lounge draws its tremendous appeal from its lively, hip interior and oceanfront patio. Stainless steel stools adorn the curved bar, and blue lanterns hang overhead while white linens, flower vases and candles top the outdoor tables. The kitchen specializes in seafood and Mediterranean cuisine, and the bar offers potent cocktails. NB Before 5:30 parking is free; after 5:30 it is $27.

HARBOR BEACH. This breezy, casual restaurant serves three meals a day, but it is a particularly lovely spot for breakfast. Calm and relaxed, with great service and all the traditional American breakfast favorites, including fresh coffee, fruit, cereals, juices, stuffed omelets, eggs, hash browns, bacon, sausage, grits, and more. For a classic start to your day, great service, a view overlooking Fort Lauderdale's largest marina and endless selections of excellent food – no doubt, this is your best bet. Conveniently, this establishment can be reached by water taxi, car or boat.
