MICANOPY. Florida's first state preserve, Paynes Prairie grants recreation opportunities galore just ten miles south of Gainesville. The 21,000-acre parcel features many varieties of terrain, from hardwood hammocks to pine flatwoods. Plant and animal life are myriad as well, and visitors frequently encounter wild horses, alligators, bison and other species when they explore the preserve. Eight miles of trails accommodate bikers, hikers and riders, and a visitor center, complete with observation tower, helps orient first-timers. NOTE: Occasional trail closings and other safety concerns may occur due to extreme weather conditions, so check the website or call the park office for details.
