A large number of Galena’s more established dining rooms are found in architecturally significant buildings wherein they deliver excellent cuisine and charming decor. For example, the DeSoto House, a stunning 1855 hotel known for its curved staircase and fine antiques, offers up the Courtyard and Generals’ restaurants. Fried Green Tomatoes serves tasty Italian fare in a setting whose storied past includes incarnations as a stove shop, a theatre and even a tombstone carver’s shop. Departing from the weathered red brick of the downtown scene, contemporary dining surroundings are available at the other bistros, cafes and pubs that call Galena home. Luna Blu offers a contemporary twist on Mediterranean cuisine, and the atmosphere of its dining room takes on additional allure on the weekends, when it hosts live music. Meanwhile, Backstreet Steak & Chop House serves up sizzling, hand-cut steaks and fresh seafood in a refined, big city setting.
