1. Mardi Gras! Galveston

The Buzz -- Unlike New Orleans' raucous observance, this celebration is family-friendly and lasts about two weeks, usually taking place in February or March. Attended by a half-million people, it boasts ten parades, numerous concerts, masquerade balls, and plenty of revelry. Musical performances take place in Historic Downtown Galveston and typically feature jazz and blues artists. Other pastimes include art exhibits and athletic competitions.
