  1. Several "Blue Holes" surround the island. Easily seen from the air, they are seemingly bottomless underwater caverns formed in the seabed during the Ice Age. Divers and geologists find them very interesting, and some still have not been explored.
  2. The Bahamian dollar is equivalent to the US dollar. Therefore the US dollar is widely accepted in Grand Bahama.
  3. You expect me to eat what? As early as the 15th century, Lucayan parents flattened the heads of their babies with boards in an effort to make them less attractive to the cannibalistic natures of the Caribs.
  4. Say what? Grand Bahama Island means "great shallow sea," a name derived from the Spanish "gran baja mar."
  5. So, that's where you've been hiding it! During the US Civil War, Grand Bahama was a supply depot for the Confederacy. During Prohibition, rumrunners used it as a staging post.
  6. Count Basie Square is named after the famous jazz entertainer who lived here for a short period and helped promote the arts on the island.
  7. Evidently, size does count for something: Grand Bahama Island is the fourth largest and the second most popular of the 700 islands and islets of the Bahamas.
  8. Sanctuary Bay is home to a pod of bottlenose dolphins. Here they partake in a dolphin/human sanctuary program. It is one of the world's largest dolphin facilities.
  9. No bones about it, some of the best bone fishing is found in the Caribbean waters that surround Grand Bahama Island.
  10. The national bird of the Bahamas? Nope, it's not the penguin – it's the flamingo!
