EASTOWN.
Boasting what many regulars deem the best tandoori and vindaloo dishes in the city, this Eastown staple looks more like a pub than an Indian joint. Inside, however, you'll find an authentic setting where a large picture window is all that separates the skilled kitchen staff from paying customers. Indian-influenced artwork and furnishings adorn the two main dining areas, and the air is heavy with appetizing aromas. All dishes are cooked to order, including homemade naan. Those wishing to experience something a little different will want to consider taking tea in the connecting Lake Chai Café.

The owner of Bombay, Bal, is a terrible man. He is a control freak to the greatest extreme.
He forces his employees to PAY for their mistakes, literally. It doesn't matter how much the order costs, if a table walks out on an employee, or if a guests order is messed up, the employee must foot the bill or be fired. I've heard of employees paying over one hundred dollars just so not to get fired.
Rumer has it Bombay goes through employees very quickly. That's because Bal will not hesitate to fire any employee who does a single thing wrong, no matter how big or small. There is no room for learning- if you are not already perfect you should not count on keeping your job. But wait! He won't fire you himself because he's too much of a chicken-shit. He will have one of his managers do it for him. One day you will go in and find you're not on the next schedule. When you inquire, WTF? The only answer you will get from your manager is, "I don't know! I don't know if it's permanent or temporary." Then a week later after not getting a single call about the verdict you can be sure you have been canned! All the while you had not idea whether or not you should find a new job.
Of course, there is a way around getting fired for messing up. 1. Offer to pay for your mistake and 2. Kiss Bal's ass and become his best friend/slave.
Not only that, he over works his employees and managers.
Bombay claims the food is authentic and fresh- it's not. It's made of frozen GFS ingredients, pre-cooked up to a week before it's served, and then thawed out in a frying pan when you order it. Papa Johns is a chain pizza restaurant and THEY have fresher ingredients!
The back of the restaurant is very dirty. It's amazing this restaurant passes sanitation tests. The counters that the waitresses package your to-go orders are almost always littered with dirty dishes and glasses, and there is constantly food on the counters.
The towels used to wipe tables and counters are reused without being washed. They will not hesitate to wipe up mess after mess with the same towel, then proceed to clean dining room tables with the same towel. It's not the fault of the servers there- they are in such a rut most of the time from being understaffed that the have no choice.
Every night at about 8pm the restaurant simply runs out of clean glasses and silverware. No worry though! The servers simply wash some glasses and silverware in a sink using the same towel they previously cleaned the counters with. Why is that? Because the owner, Bal, likes to save money by short stocking the restaurant.
This man is a money grubbing, heartless, fear-inducing, person of no moral character.
A couple of months ago the city of Grand Rapids wanted to present Bal with an award for Best Reuse of an old building in Eastown. Congratulations Bal! Thanks! Except he NEVER returned their phone calls once and didn't show up to the award ceremony. Talk about unappreciative.
Oh yeah, and if you're a fan of the five second rule- well believe me, you should love Bombay. As a server who is afraid of having to pay for messed up orders, there are NO reservations about picking food up right off the floor and sticking it on a plate. If no one sees did it really happen?
So, I'm urging everyone to Boycott Bombay and the new Queens Pub.
If you think I'm fabricating any of this- even a hint, ask any person who has worked for this man and they will verify it.
Apparently his wife was a scary woman but she is out of the picture- the two divorced- so she is no longer a threat to those poor, helpless employees.
