GREEN BAY. This elegant Italian eatery occupies a corner location at the head of the Washington Street entertainment district. The dining area, whose huge storefront windows offer clear views of outside activity, features a pressed-tin ceiling and textured yellow walls hung with photos depicting scenes from the Old Country. Smartly appointed tables with candles and red-and-white cloths complete the romantic scene. The menu, meanwhile, features homemade Italian fare that many locals regard as the best in town. Around the corner from Mikey's Pub, this attractive Thai restaurant has emerged as one of Green Bay's most popular international eateries, thanks to a wide range of spicy fowl, seafood, and vegetarian dishes. Menu highlights include deep-fried catfish in creamy red curry, roasted Thai duck with red curry and pineapple, and stir-fried Chinese eggplant with black bean sauce. Patio seating in a garden-like setting is available. During the workweek, Bangkok Garden's lunch buffet is among the best deals in town. Reservations are accepted.

DE PERE. Known as one of the area's better pizza joints, Bilotti's enjoys more than its share of out-of-town traffic. This family-owned and operated pizzeria has changed little since opening in the mid-'50s, still featuring friendly service, small-town atmosphere, and legendary, hand-tossed pies prepared however you like and baked in an Old World-style brick oven. House specialties include the California with fresh mushrooms and zucchini, and the Hawaiian with pineapple and Canadian bacon. Pasta dishes and other entrees are also available.

One of downtown's top international eateries, Washington Street's China Palace features a casual, friendly atmosphere and great prices, making it an easy favorite with area hotel guests looking for a change of pace. Chef specialties include Seven Stars Around the Moon (lobster, shrimp, chicken, and pork with vegetables), Subgum Wonton (chicken, roast pork, shrimp, and crab meat with vegetables and a crispy wonton), and batter-dipped Salt and Pepper Shrimp. Folks on the run can stop in for a to-go cup of fresh-ground coffee or – to cure a case of the morning slow-mos – a specialty espresso. Known for homemade pasta dishes and hand-tossed pizzas, Sammy's on Oneida has been a tradition since the late '50s, when the Clemo and Crispigna families ran their first pizzeria on Walnut Street. Though the location may have changed, members of the Crispigna family continue to own and operate the place today and still use traditional family recipes to create signature, old-fashioned Italian fare. The open kitchen and rough, earth-toned walls provide a homey setting for enjoying a 16-inch Sammy's Special Pizza – Wisconsin-made mozzarella cheese topped with Italian sausage, onion, and green peppers. Take-out orders are accepted.

Indeed, the place looks to have changed little from its earliest days, and it still sports red paneled walls and recessed shelving with steins and other German curiosities.
