The humble determination and strong commitment of one woman's decision to educate the underprivileged is honored at this historic site. The Charlotte Hawkins Brown Memorial commemorates Dr. Charlotte Brown who returned to her native North Carolina as an 18-year old to teach rural African American youth. In 1902 she established the Alice Freeman Palmer Institute. The school included 350 acres of farmland and graduated over a thousand students.   (© 10Best)
