Candlelight Run: The LocationClemson University's ICAR campus (International Center for Automotive Research) makes a stunning backdrop for the 5K, with its contemporary structures and well-planned spaces. By day, at twilight, or by candlelight, the area is a fitting setting for the Candlelight Run – both entities promote service to a cause greater than what's immediately seen. |
Candlelight Run: The CourseThe Candlelight Run course is easily accessible from I-85, I-385, Laurens Road, and downtown Greenville. Separate routes are set up for the 5K and the Family Fun Run, making sure that everyone can enjoy the experience. Parking is available at a nearby parking garage, but no one is allowed to park along the race course itself. Traffic will be controlled, and local roads will be closed as necessary. Water stations and course monitors will be positioned to ensure that everything runs smoothly. |
Candlelight Run: The CrowdGet on your marks, get set, go! The USATF-certified course winds through the Clemson University ICAR campus, offering open spaces and plenty of room to run. In 2008, almost 2000 runners registered for the Candlelight Run, and the early numbers look ready to top that in 2009. |
Candlelight Run: The PurposeWhile participating in the Candlelight Run may seem like a fun time for fellowship and play, being involved in the race does much more than allow runners to test their mettle and strive for a personal best. Entry fees benefit local charities, helping the underprivileged during times of need and contributing to the overall betterment of Greenville and the Upstate. |
Candlelight Run: The FutureThe Family Fun Run lets parents, children, toddlers, grandparents, and even babies in strollers get involved in the event. It follows a mile-long route and begins at 8pm (the 5K begins at 9pm). Give the kids a taste of group effort, athleticism, and charitable giving, and start them off on a lifetime of physical fitness and concern for others. |
Candlelight Run: The BeautyWhen the sky darkens, the real allure of the race shines forth, along with its evocative name. Each year, volunteers set up some 2100 luminaries to light the way for participants, allowing them to run in a warm glow. The Candlelight Run is South Carolina's largest night run, and everyone involved relishes the opportunity to stride along in the satisfying heat of the evening, unaffected by traffic and working for a good cause. |
Candlelight Run: The GoodsNeed a new pair of shoes, a few been-there-done-that tee-shirts as proof of participation, or other athletic gear? Check out the merchandise laid out for attendees to browse and purchase. Even if you're not running, you can take advantage of all the activity and sociability built around the Candlelight Run and come support others who are hitting the pavement. |
Candlelight Run: The SupportLots of volunteers make the Candlelight Run possible, and they work diligently to ensure that everyone is taken care of and has a great experience. From helping with registration to distributing tee-shirts and race packets, these people are integral to the effort. And as with any grand enterprise, lots of hands are needed. Folks interested in helping with the event are welcome to join in. |
Candlelight Run: The HostThe Candlelight Run celebrates its 13th year in 2009. Early on, it was affiliated with different festivals, but in 2006, the Greenville Junior Chamber Foundation began to coordinate the event, developing it into the prominent race it is today.
The Greenville Junior Chamber (or Jaycees) promotes leadership through community service, and its members have worked for the good of Greenville since 1922. The local chapter has been recognized for excellence at both the state and national levels. Membership is open to residents between 18 and 40. |
Candlelight Run: The WorkThe Jaycees regularly spearhead initiatives to improve Greenville, and they've made significant contributions to the community during their 85-year history. Among their success stories are the annexation of Augusta Road, fluoridation of the water supply, the building of the Greenville Zoo, and Operation Red T.A.P.E. (Teen Alcohol Prevention and Education). Their broad scope doesn't hew to a single cause but makes inroads wherever they see a need. |
Candlelight Run: The ResultsOne of the recipients of the Candlelight Run's monies is the Christmas Shopping Tour. For more than 50 years, this effort has benefited underprivileged children in the community. Each year, approximately 200 boys and girls affiliated with Salvation Army services are allowed to purchase gifts for loved ones. The kids, too, are given toys, bicycles, and other seasonal presents, thanks to the Candlelight Run's proceeds. |
Candlelight Run: The SuccessA major benefactor of the Candlelight Run is Jaycee Camp Hope, a Clemson, SC-based facility that caters to the mentally challenged. Designed to facilitate community, engagement, and independence, the camp focuses on people 8 years and above. While participants have fun and play games, they also learn to cooperate with others and to interact in group environments. |
