DOWNTOWN. Holland-born Addy (pronounced "oddy") created America's first authentic Dutch café right here in Greenville. The dim, rustic interior draws downtown professionals and groups of friends who go to hear live jazz music on Tuesday and Friday evenings. Beer and wine are readily available, and the bartender can suggest a great selection if you're undecided.

DOWNTOWN. Industrial accents, pricks of candlelight and hip attitude give this below-ground club big-city ambience. It's especially popular late at night, when Greenville typically begins to wind down. As DJs play house and electronica, patrons groove on the dance floor or lounge on sofas with chocolate martinis or some other fashionable cocktail. A VIP area is available, and happy hour specials are a great bargain Tuesday through Friday evenings. A great alternative to big, noisy sports bars and an ideal place for a date.

DOWNTOWN. The Café and Then Some combines great food with hilarious entertainment to give you an evening full of fun. The café opens for dinner at 6:30, and the show starts at 8:30. The cast of this comedy troupe has been successfully poking fun at Greenville's social, civic and political scene since 1978. The show usually lasts about two hours with an intermission. The dinner menu offers a variety ranging from chicken and steak to seafood and pasta. All nights are smoke free.

PELHAM ROAD. Chophouse '47 hearkens back to the cozy, masculine eateries of the World War II era – subdued lighting, hardwood floors, dark-stained tables and chairs, and the Chairman himself crooning in the background. Kick off your meal with rich oysters Rockefeller or shellfish bisque, then move on to more serious fare – a delicious 14-oz New York strip, Tenderloin Towers wrapped in a giant onion ring, or a 38-oz Portherhouse for Two. Add to the mix a superb international wine list and a dessert menu that features fine cigars, and you've got the perfect place to entertain clients or celebrate a big event.

5. Barley's Taproom and Pizzeria

DOWNTOWN. Barley's Taproom and Pizzeria is appropriately named for the things they do best: beer and pizza. But this is better than just beer and pizza. Barley's offers an enormous variety of specialty beers on tap and by the bottle, and their pizza is truly some of the best anywhere. Other menu items are good, but the pizza is the real reason to dine here. This is a great place to go with a group if you want to enjoy yourself without keeping your voices down. The high ceilings of this old building make for a fun atmosphere. Barley's has a small platform stage where local musicians often perform.

6. Soby's

DOWNTOWN. This Main Street staple is one of Greenville's favorites. The new-south cuisine includes such tempting entrees as New Orleans BBQ shrimp and grits, grilled smoked pork loin, and crab cake remoulade. The desserts are sumptuous, especially the banana cream pie. Soby's also offers a lively bar scene which attracts Greenville's after-business crowd with its extensive wine list and after dinner drink options. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff.

DOWNTOWN. A dramatic interplay of glass, steel and concrete establish a hip, high-class ambience in one of Greenville's most cosmopolitan restaurants. Big-city style pervades both the dining room and the mezzanine lounge – a perfect place to impress clients or honor a special occasion. While aged, hand-cut steaks are the menu's spectacular focus, patrons can also treat themselves to items like five-spice seared scallops, chipotle barbecue-glazed short ribs, and the restaurant's giant crab cake. The wine list gives preference to reds from California and Europe. A great place just for drinks too.

8. Rick Erwin's West End Grille

WEST END. Attracting a professional crowd, this upscale enterprise grants fine dining and a great bar scene. The interior is a study of dark, polished woods, rich colors, textured brick, and wrought iron that's eminently gracious. Local art adds a vibrant touch. The menu's steaks are Certified Angus beef, and fresh seafood is delivered daily, confirming the quality of items like a NY strip, seared tuna, or lamb or veal chops. As a boon to diners, many entrees are available in two sizes, as are by-the-glass wines, which offer terrific value. Family-style side dishes like creamed spinach must be ordered separately, and experienced servers are a welcome amenity.

9. Chicora Alley

608 S Main St, across from Falls Park, Greenville, SC 29601 · 864-232-4100

WEST END. Chicora (accent on the second syllable) is the success story of two Greenville brothers, Ben and Adam Dixon. Their restaurant and bar has gained lots of attention since its opening, and dining and drinking coexist happily in the second-floor space. Along the back wall sits the bar, constantly populated by regulars and animated groups, quaffing longnecks and draft PBRs. Just in front of it, diners gather at pub tables for creative Southwestern-Caribbean fare like conch fritters, pork quesadillas and Black Angus beef medallions. You'll also find awesome sweet potato fries and square, school pizza! A great place to meet friends or just to hang out.

10. Smoke on the Water

1 Augusta St, Greenville, SC 29601 · 864-232-9091

User Rating:  Rating: 4 / 5   (Rate It)

My Suitcase:   (Add to My Suitcase)

WEST END. Most times, folks think of barbecue in conjunction with small, no-frills eateries. Smoke on the Water quickly dispels that perception. The upscale restaurant is as serious about ambience as it is about barbecue. Quietly elegant, it's a great place for lunch or dinner, especially when you factor in perfectly cooked beef brisket, pulled pork, baby back ribs, prime rib, or beer-butt chicken. To please all tastes, a variety of zesty sauces can be had – tomato-, mustard-, or vinegar-based. Add in fresh greens and warm fruit cobbler, and your lips will be smacking in no time! The restaurant's busy bar is also a top hangout during happy hour.
