NORTH PLEASANTBURG. Whether you're a sushi aficionado or simply a novice, this sushi pub is the destination of choice. Ken-San Shimizu, known as one of the best sushi chefs in the country, ensures that each roll is fresh, well-prepared and beautiful. If you've never had sushi, you'll be initiated the right way, and if you love it already, you'll gain a new appreciation of the culinary art. Extensive menu and fun atmosphere.

AUGUSTA ROAD. The pared-down decor of Smokin' Stokes is a fitting complement to the richness of the barbecue. Meat is foremost here, and nothing obscures its award-winning presence. Whether you enjoy it on a bun, a platter, or topping a baked potato, you can't beat this recipe, which uses Cheerwine soda as an integral ingredient. The fries, too, are special, crisp and tinged with cinnamon to give them an extra kick. For even more Southern punch, order an RC cola and finish things up with a big helping of banana puddin' (no "g" necessary).

DOWNTOWN. Northern Italian cuisine is the delicious specialty of this warm, friendly restaurant. Try veal scaloppini prepared in marsala sauce with porcini mushrooms, or go vegetarian with spinach and walnut ravioli in cream sauce. All pastas are prepared on the premises, a welcome nod to quality and attention. The dining room is elegantly casual, and reservations are strongly recommended. Patio dining is available if the weather is cooperative.

Also has a theater which shows independent and foreign films as well as live entertainment and art exhibitions. Call ahead for a schedule of coming attractions.

HAYWOOD ROAD. Stax's Omega is part of the venerable string of Stax restaurants that have been serving Greenville for decades. A relaxed ambiance and a diverse crowd of locals make you feel right at home any time of day. Excellent service and fresh coffee provide a fitting complement to the hearty breakfasts. Huge, light pancakes, great French toast and fluffy omelets are particularly good. For lunch and dinner, a meat and veggie plate highlights the menu. This casual diner is also known for its bakery. A local tradition.

7. Rocky Creek Bakehouse

3124 S Hwy 14, Greenville, SC 29615 · 864-627-1583

PELHAM ROAD. Greenville's only European bakery. Pastries and coffee available for breakfast. Choose from among soups, salads and sandwiches and enjoy a delightful lunch in a warm atmosphere. Whether you prefer a sandwich on wonderful bread, or pasta, be sure to leave room for dessert. The sweets are as good as the bread. Take home a loaf of focaccia or a few baguettes. Either way, you will not be disappointed.

8. Wise's Bar-B-Que House

25548 Hwy 76, Newberry, SC 29108 · 803-276-6699

Sometimes you have to work for something good, and with Wise's, the drive is the price you'll pay for incredible barbecue. Located between Clinton and Newberry, it's a distance from Greenville, but the mustard-based sauce and tender meat are worth the effort.

9. Addy's Dutch Café & Restaurant

17 E Coffee St, Greenville, SC 29601 · 864-232-2339

User Rating:  Rating: 5 / 5   (Rate It)

DOWNTOWN. Holland-born Addy (pronounced "oddy") created America's first authentic Dutch café right here in Greenville. The dim, rustic interior draws downtown professionals and groups of friends, and although the nightlife scene and weekly jazz are popular, the food is excellent as well. Everything is made fresh daily, and the quality shows. Try poached mussels over pasta, pan-seared pork tenderloin, chicken boursin, or even a filet or fresh catch. Specialties include biefstuk (seared beef medallions) and bahmi (pasta, vegetables, and meat with cucumbers, tomatoes and a saté). Great beer selection.

10. Saskatoon

477 Haywood Rd, Greenville, SC 29607 · 864-297-7244

User Rating:  Rating: 4 / 5   (Rate It)

HAYWOOD ROAD. A blazing, river rock fireplace, wood paneling, and rustic accents give indication that Saskatoon's a different sort of restaurant – and steakhouse. A Pacific Northwest flair colors the interior and the menu, which relies heavily on perfectly prepared game and fish dishes. Options change every few weeks, making the selection happily variable. Among the possibilities you'll encounter are ostrich filet, kangaroo steak, roasted duck and cedar plank salmon. Indecisive folks should try the chef's mixed grill, which offers three flavors on a single plate. Beef, chicken, veal and pork are available for patrons who aren't so adventurous.
