DOWNTOWN. Industrial accents, pricks of candlelight and hip attitude give this below-ground club big-city ambience. It's especially popular late at night, when Greenville typically begins to wind down. As DJs play house and electronica, patrons groove on the dance floor or lounge on sofas with chocolate martinis or some other fashionable cocktail. A VIP area is available, and happy hour specials are a great bargain Tuesday through Friday evenings. A great alternative to big, noisy sports bars and an ideal place for a date.

WEST END. Chicora (accent on the second syllable) is the success story of two Greenville brothers, Ben and Adam Dixon. Their restaurant and bar has gained lots of attention since its opening, and dining and drinking coexist happily in the second-floor space. Along the back wall sits the bar, constantly populated by regulars and animated groups, quaffing longnecks and draft PBRs. Just in front of it, diners gather at pub tables for creative Southwestern-Caribbean fare like conch fritters, pork quesadillas and Black Angus beef medallions. You'll also find awesome sweet potato fries and square, school pizza! A great place to meet friends or just to hang out.

DOWNTOWN. Be prepared for a throng of locals if you're headed here on a weekend night. With two levels, dart boards, booths and plenty of wide open space, this is a good spot to mix and mingle. Guinness flows freely, and a number of domestic beers are on tap, too. Live Irish music plays to eager crowds on occasion, and Tuesday's trivia night is well-attended. The classic pub decor includes a picture of the owner's mother looking out across the hubbub. Beneath her gaze, you can sample shepherd's pie and other traditional fare.

DOWNTOWN. Barley's Taproom and Pizzeria is appropriately named for the things they do best: beer and pizza. But this is better than just beer and pizza. Barley's offers an enormous variety of specialty beers on tap and by the bottle, and their pizza is truly some of the best anywhere. Other menu items are good, but the pizza is the real reason to dine here. This is a great place to go with a group if you want to enjoy yourself without keeping your voices down. The high ceilings of this old building make for a fun atmosphere. Barley's has a small platform stage where local musicians often perform.

DOWNTOWN. High on the list of Greenville's places to be seen, this tapas restaurant and bar is eminently hip. The place is compact, but laughter runs rampant, and the ambiance is intoxicating. A great wine list accompanies the array of tapas items, which include Roquefort grapes, lobster cigars, and green lip mussels. There's also a full bar and a small private room. The menu promises euphoria, and although you may not get there completely, chances are you'll come pretty close.

DOWNTOWN. This downtown eatery and brew company fills a large, narrow space on Main Street. Right inside the entrance, fermenting tanks stand like sentinels, alerting patrons to the handcrafted beers produced there. Sample a few, or visit the full service bar for liquor and wine. The lunch and dinner menus offer burgers, game and other hearty fare. Fun hang-out for groups of friends. Good place to meet new people. Convenient for an after-work drink.
