WOODRUFF ROAD. When it comes to BBQ, Bucky's gets few complaints from diners, who rave about the flavorful meat, tangy red and yellow sauces, and rotation of side dishes such as mac'n'cheese, green beans, potato salad, baked beans and cole slaw. Guests enjoy helpful, efficient service and may eat in the casual dining room or outdoors.

NORTH PLEASANTBURG. Widely proclaimed as the best barbecue in town, Henry's is Greenville's great equalizer, seating business and government types alongside guys in jeans and workboots. Such a response isn't surprising when you sample the tender, succulent meat (with your choice of sauce) served alongside baked beans, cole slaw or fries. It's a classic Southern lunch, and you can readily gauge its popularity by the crowds. The decor at Henry's isn't fancy and seating is somewhat limited but, after the first bite, you'll know where the restaurant has directed its attention.

AUGUSTA ROAD. The pared-down decor of Smokin' Stokes is a fitting complement to the richness of the barbecue. Meat is foremost here, and nothing obscures its award-winning presence. Whether you enjoy it on a bun, a platter, or topping a baked potato, you can't beat this recipe, which uses Cheerwine soda as an integral ingredient. The fries, too, are special, crisp and tinged with cinnamon to give them an extra kick. For even more Southern punch, order an RC cola and finish things up with a big helping of banana puddin' (no "g" necessary).

Well-known for its mustard-based sauce and lean pork barbecue, Brushy Creek is located between Greenville and Easley. They also do chicken and ribs and aren't ones to skimp on the portions. Sandwiches are delicious (especially the chopped barbecue), but the plates, with cole slaw, baked beans and bread, are an even better bargain. Make sure to give the Brunswick stew a try, too.

PELHAM. Tucked behind a service station and anchoring one end of a strip mall, this unassuming restaurant is known for its chopped barbecue. At lunch, it pulls in a crowd from the Pelham Road area, so you'll want to go early to get a table. Most people order the barbecue plate, which is loaded with a quarter pound of meat and two side items, plus bread and chips. It's a good deal.

GREER. This BBQ joint in downtown Greer serves tender, juicy smoked pork sandwiches, customized to your liking. Choose large or small, buns or no buns, and if want add two sides such as cole slaw, baked beans, fries or potato chips. However, if BBQ doesn't appeal the menu boasts some tempting alternatives – the chili cheeseburger and onion rings are tough to turn down! Drive-through service available.

GREER. Somehow, the rustic log cabin that houses this restaurant seems an apt setting for the smoky flavor of good barbecue. Mutt's is right on target with their pork and chicken, prepared daily on the premises. Customers reap the benefits of this care, digging into sandwiches, plates (with two sides), or even racks of lean ribs. And among sides, the sweet potato casserole, baked with plenty of brown sugar, is the undisputed king. Try a little the next time you go, or call Mutt's to cater your favorite event. Buffets on Sunday, Tuesday night and Friday night.
