NORTH MAIN. Exposed brick walls, pendant lighting and white linen table cloths accent this tasteful dining room. The extensive menu offers everything from tandoori chicken tikka to goat in curry sauce to vegetarian dishes like eggplant bhartha. Authentic Indian breads baked in a Tandoori oven complement the meal, and the daily lunch buffet is a great value.

PELHAM. Tucked behind a service station and anchoring one end of a strip mall, this unassuming restaurant is known for its chopped barbecue. At lunch, it pulls in a crowd from the Pelham Road area, so you'll want to go early to get a table. Most people order the barbecue plate, which is loaded with a quarter pound of meat and two side items, plus bread and chips. It's a good deal.

DOWNTOWN. Gas lanterns, high ceilings, chunky wood seating and exposed brick walls establish a casual, intimate atmosphere at this Main Street mainstay. It's often filled with diners in the mood for well-prepared, affordable fare. Wood-fired pizzas and homemade pastas get lots of attention, as do rotisserie chicken, gourmet sandwiches and flavorful salads. Two dozen wines are available by the glass, making it possible to sample several during the course of a meal. If the weather's pleasant, take advantage of sidewalk seating and the people-watching opportunities it affords.

SOUTH PLEASANTBURG. Incredibly popular for lunch, the Pita House is always crowded. Still, the service is fast and the patrons are never rude. Plus, the food is great! Garlicky hummus, fresh-baked pita bread, stuffed grape leaves, and hot falafel will appease your appetite for something unusual. When you place your order at the counter, keep an eye out for a table. Turnover is quick, but seats are at a premium. The best deals are plates, which come with a sampling of several foods. Share with some friends, and don't forget the baklava.

GREER. This Greenville standby has reopened in a new, upgraded location in the Taylors area (actually, it's just a few miles away from Greenville Tech's Greer campus). And while the digs are shinier than ever, the menu's also been revamped. For starters, there's a meat' n'three option that's offerings extend to include some tempting grilled dishes as well as staples like fried chicken and hamburger steak. If homestyle cooking's not your thing, have a juicy burger, char-grilled chicken breast, a couple of corndogs, or sirloin steak with a baked potato, salad and Texas toast.

DOWNTOWN. This restaurant developed from Northampton's much-applauded wine shop and is a natural outgrowth of its focus on quality goods. The bright, narrow space is quiet and decidedly unpretentious, so it's a great place for a date or a low-key celebration. The menu boasts dishes like roasted pheasant, ale-braised rabbit, coriander-crusted tuna loin, and twin tournedos with basil pesto duxelles. Each dish is accompanied by suggestions for wine pairings, or you can choose a bottle from the shop and have it served with your meal. Special wine dinners are available regularly. Prixe-fixe: $98 with wine.

HAYWOOD ROAD. A brick and glass-block entrance welcomes you into this popular venue run by the Stathakis family. Steaks, seafood, ribs and chicken figure prominently on the menu, and many benefit from the introduction of lemon and olive oil, seasonings from the family's Greek heritage. Steaks are available individually or paired with shrimp or crab for an additional depth of flavor. Entrees also come with either soup or salad. The attentive service and relaxing atmosphere ensure that you'll always feel comfortable.

MAULDIN. The owner of this comfortable eatery hails from Buffalo, and its menu offers abundant indication of his heritage. Pizzas come in large and small versions, and you can fashion your own specialty or take advantage of varieties like the Mexican, the Hawaiian and the Vegetarian. Also delicious is the Italian Flag, which translates green, red and white into basil, tomatoes and three cheeses. Other possibilities include authentic Buffalo chicken wings, pasta plates and subs. In addition, regulars applaud Monday through Friday's Buffalo fish fry, which promises tender haddock, fries and cole slaw.

WOODRUFF ROAD. Situated east of I-385 on Woodruff Road, this upscale grill combats the backwoods stigma of seafood restaurants with its hip environs. Its strong popularity also gives credence to a tasty menu. Fish (you choose from several varieties) is cooked over a wood-fired grill; the smoky flavor is accented with mango-, garlic-, teriyaki and butter-tinged sauces. Mussels, rock shrimp, calamari and lobster also make appearances, and pastas, chicken, steaks and pork round out the options. Waits can be common, so plan accordingly.

WEST END. This cozy cafe, located on the lower level of a historic brick building, has become a tasty stop-off for casual fare. Dine inside amid funky artwork, or claim a table on the patio and enjoy a little al fresco time. The lunch menu puts forth sandwiches, salads, soups, wraps and burgers, along with daily specials. A few selections: Glenn's wasabi shrimp caesar wrap, smoked bacon and provolone burger, grilled salmon sandwich and the reuben wrap. You can also build your own sandwich or do a combo with soup or salad.
