GREER. Located in downtown Greer, this neighborhood restaurant offers traditional Southern fare. Though the aesthetics won't knock your socks off, a place like this can really be judged by only one quality: The food. Begin your day with their fantastic pancakes or eggs benedict or, for a true treat, stop in at lunchtime to try the delicious selection of meat and veggies.

HAYWOOD ROAD. Stax's Omega is part of the venerable string of Stax restaurants that have been serving Greenville for decades. A relaxed ambiance and a diverse crowd of locals make you feel right at home any time of day. Excellent service and fresh coffee provide a fitting complement to the hearty breakfasts. Huge, light pancakes, great French toast and fluffy omelets are particularly good. For lunch and dinner, a meat and veggie plate highlights the menu. This casual diner is also known for its bakery. A local tradition.

DOWNTOWN. When you go to Tommy's, be prepared to see all walks of life – from judges to CEOs to working men and women. Everyone claims Tommy's as one of their favorite places for down-home eats. As the name suggests, country-cured ham is their specialty, but their biscuits are a special treat! Great place for that early morning breakfast. Tommy's has it all, including all the meats and veggies your mom wants you to eat.

CHERRYDALE. This Greenville landmark sports an unimpressive exterior and a nondescript decor, but having breakfast at Stax's is a local tradition. The warmth of the staff, many of whom have worked there for ages, is well known, and the hearty, down-home breakfasts are highly recommended. For a true southern biscuit, light and slathered with butter, this is the place. Eggs, hotcakes, grits and all the basics are hot and satisfying, just like your mom used to make. As for later in the day, the meat and veggie selections have been keeping Greenville well-fed for years – and their roast beef and gravy has won over many a palate.

NORTH PLEASANTBURG. What can you say about Krispy Kreme except that they make the best doughnuts around? Sweet and light as air, nothing compares to the original glazed rings, but the jelly- and cream-filled doughnuts aren't far behind. Whether you eat them individually or by the dozen, they're scrumptious, especially with a steaming cup of coffee. If you're really feeling decadent, pick up a few when the "Hot Doughnuts Now" sign flashes on. Bliss!

DOWNTOWN. Simple and traditional, this diner is straightforward in decor and tone. The country cooking, a favorite of local residents, is flavorful but definitely not for dieters. Eggs are the star at breakfast, and at lunch, you can't go wrong with the meat and three. The vegetable plate is also popular; choose from items such as fried okra, creamed corn, fresh greens, fried green tomatoes and mashed potatoes. Service is fast, and you'll always get a hearty welcome from the staff. Affordable and accommodating.

PELHAM. Greenville's only European bakery. Pastries and coffee available for breakfast. Choose from among soups, salads and sandwiches and enjoy a delightful lunch in a warm atmosphere. Whether you prefer a sandwich on wonderful bread, or pasta, be sure to leave room for dessert. The sweets are as good as the bread. Take home a loaf of focaccia or a few baguettes. Either way, you will not be disappointed.
