TRAVELERS REST. Set in an expansive hall of stone, stucco, and rough-hewn wood, this elegant restaurant invites diners to enjoy a fireside meal. The ambiance is country French, reflected in the antiques, heart pine floors and custom chandeliers. Spectacular views welcome diners as they feast on provencale cuisine or enjoy after-dinner drinks on the patio. Steaks and seafood figure prominently on the menu, and each entree can be complemented by a vintage from the extensive wine list. Dinners in the chef's private dining room can also be arranged.

NORTH PLEASANTBURG. Regulars can't say enough good things about this unassuming eatery set apart from Greenville's main dining clusters. Owner Rosalinda Sala has culled an enormous number of authentic recipes, and the menu reflects their breadth. Each dish is crafted of market-fresh ingredients: grilled steaks and chicken, sauteed shrimp, marinated pork, and fish dressed with a variety of sauces. Fabulous tacos, burritos, enchiladas and quesadillas are available as well. Signature creations include Rosalinda's tomatillo salsa, her lamb tacos, and the michelada, a Mexican beer tinged with lime and spices.

SOUTH PLEASANTBURG. Incredibly popular for lunch, the Pita House is always crowded. Still, the service is fast and the patrons are never rude. Plus, the food is great! Garlicky hummus, fresh-baked pita bread, stuffed grape leaves, and hot falafel will appease your appetite for something unusual. When you place your order at the counter, keep an eye out for a table. Turnover is quick, but seats are at a premium. The best deals are plates, which come with a sampling of several foods. Share with some friends, and don't forget the baklava.

TAYLORS. Located in the digs of a former Waffle House, this inviting eatery serves up outstanding Brazilian eats at affordable prices.
