NORTH MAIN. Run by a husband-and-wife team, this funky cafe is a deeply personal enterprise, energized by music, travel, and the occasional off-beat impulse. As a result, the menu is a treasure trove of worldly things. While lunch brings gourmet salads and sandwiches, and dinner is known for its international fare and grilled meats (spiced as you choose), brunch is a comfort-food haven. It provides omelets, breakfast burritos, French toast, shrimp and grits, eggs Benedict and more. Best of all, patrons can craft their own Bloody Marys and mimosas while they wait! Adjacent Horizon Records grants great browsing, and The Bohemian offers a laid-back, coffeehouse vibe throughout the day.

WEST END. This West End café has a reputation as a women's lunch spot, but it's a great destination for anyone who likes good food in a relaxing setting. Lunch offerings include chicken salad, tuna salad and a variety of soups. Fruit plates are popular and the selection of sandwiches will please any appetite. Best of all, their cakes and other sweets are sure to knock your socks off. Lunch entrees run $6-11.

AUGUSTA ROAD. At lunch time, you'll see well-to-do Augusta Road yuppies, tables of senior citizens, groups of professionals, construction workers on break, a crew of Greenville policemen and women, and crowds of teens. In short, everybody comes here. The interior is dotted with photos of local baseball teams and information about civic groups. An extremely friendly staff is happy to give you refills of the best sweet tea around. The menu, varied as it is, makes ordering difficult, but you can't go wrong with the meat and three combination or the Greek salad, which has tons of feta cheese and a great garlic dressing. Stop by in the AM for a tummy-tickling country ham biscuit, or a plate of eggs and bacon – you won't be disappointed.

WEST END. This cozy cafe, located on the lower level of a historic brick building, has become a tasty stop-off for casual fare. Dine inside amid funky artwork, or claim a table on the patio and enjoy a little al fresco time. The lunch menu puts forth sandwiches, salads, soups, wraps and burgers, along with daily specials. A few selections: Glenn's wasabi shrimp caesar wrap, smoked bacon and provolone burger, grilled salmon sandwich and the reuben wrap. You can also build your own sandwich or do a combo with soup or salad.

WEST END. When Falls Park was created, this restaurant was part of the redesign, and it offers great views of both the surrounding landscape and of dramatic Liberty Bridge. Even with such competition, the restaurant ably holds its own. The light-filled, clean-lined interior gets a kick from black-and-white photography and invites diners to enjoy everything from salads and nachos to fresh fish, steaks, pastas, grilled chicken, BBQ brisket and a pimento cheese burger. Lunch features salads, specialty sandwiches and burgers. Patio dining permits intriguing glimpses of the park's ever-changing foot traffic.

HAYWOOD ROAD. Although it looks like a fast food eatery, Five Guys rises head and shoulders above run-of-the-mill quick food. They specialize in hamburgers, hot dogs, fries and grilled cheese sandwiches (you can get a veggie burger), but what they do, they do incredibly well. Everything is prepared fresh daily, and there's not a freezer in sight. As a result, quality is high and folks are won over immediately. Portions are more than generous, and while you wait for your order to come up, you're invited to munch on free peanuts. And just so you know: Here, a "little" burger is a full-sized patty, and a "regular" consists of two whole patties. Eat hearty!

WEST END. Most times, folks think of barbecue in conjunction with small, no-frills eateries. Smoke on the Water quickly dispels that perception. The upscale restaurant is as serious about ambience as it is about barbecue. Quietly elegant, it's a great place for lunch or dinner, especially when you factor in perfectly cooked beef brisket, pulled pork, baby back ribs, prime rib, or beer-butt chicken. To please all tastes, a variety of zesty sauces can be had – tomato-, mustard-, or vinegar-based. Add in fresh greens and warm fruit cobbler, and your lips will be smacking in no time! The restaurant's busy bar is also a top hangout during happy hour.

NORTH MAIN. For long-time Greenville residents, this little hideaway is one of the true treasures of the North Main area. Located "at the bottom of the hill" in the same building as a laundry, the Soda Shop is the type of place an unknowing soul would be tempted to drive right by without a second glance. However, doing so is a grave error in judgment – just ask anyone who's had the chance to sink their teeth into one of the cook's special pimento cheese chili burgers! Great shakes and onion rings, too!

DOWNTOWN. Near downtown. This cafe is a favorite with those pressed for time. Serves up boxed lunches which include sandwich, salad, chips, cookie and a drink, all for $7. Call ahead for easy pick-up. Most patrons opt to carry out – there is a small dining room if you'd like to catch your breath while you enjoy your food.
