DOWNTOWN. A dramatic interplay of glass, steel and concrete establish a hip, high-class ambience in one of Greenville's most cosmopolitan restaurants. Big-city style pervades both the dining room and the mezzanine lounge – a perfect place to impress clients or honor a special occasion. While aged, hand-cut steaks are the menu's spectacular focus, patrons can also treat themselves to items like five-spice seared scallops, chipotle barbecue-glazed short ribs, and the restaurant's giant crab cake. The wine list gives preference to reds from California and Europe. A great place just for drinks too.

PELHAM. Chophouse '47 hearkens back to the cozy, masculine eateries of the World War II era – subdued lighting, hardwood floors, dark-stained tables and chairs, and the Chairman himself crooning in the background. Kick off your meal with rich oysters Rockefeller or shellfish bisque, then move on to more serious fare – a delicious 14-oz New York strip, Tenderloin Towers wrapped in a giant onion ring, or a 38-oz Portherhouse for Two. Add to the mix a superb international wine list and a dessert menu that features fine cigars, and you've got the perfect place to entertain clients or celebrate a big event.

WEST END. Attracting a professional crowd, this upscale enterprise grants fine dining and a great bar scene. The interior is a study of dark, polished woods, rich colors, textured brick, and wrought iron that's eminently gracious. Local art adds a vibrant touch. The menu's steaks are Certified Angus beef, and fresh seafood is delivered daily, confirming the quality of items like a NY strip, seared tuna, or lamb or veal chops. As a boon to diners, many entrees are available in two sizes, as are by-the-glass wines, which offer terrific value. Family-style side dishes like creamed spinach must be ordered separately, and experienced servers are a welcome amenity.

HAYWOOD ROAD. A blazing, river rock fireplace, wood paneling, and rustic accents give indication that Saskatoon's a different sort of restaurant – and steakhouse. A Pacific Northwest flair colors the interior and the menu, which relies heavily on perfectly prepared game and fish dishes. Options change every few weeks, making the selection happily variable. Among the possibilities you'll encounter are ostrich filet, kangaroo steak, roasted duck and cedar plank salmon. Indecisive folks should try the chef's mixed grill, which offers three flavors on a single plate. Beef, chicken, veal and pork are available for patrons who aren't so adventurous.

CHERRYDALE. Dim and atmospheric, this oft-frequented steakhouse is a landmark in the area. It's inevitably busy and you'll have trouble finding a parking place, but don't let these obstacles prevent you from obtaining one of the fabulous, grilled steaks. They're cut and prepared as you want them, and come with a trip to the well-stocked salad bar. Chicken, pork and seafood entrees will satisfy those friends who aren't in the mood for steak, but try to convince them otherwise.

HAYWOOD ROAD. A brick and glass-block entrance welcomes you into this popular venue run by the Stathakis family. Steaks, seafood, ribs and chicken figure prominently on the menu, and many benefit from the introduction of lemon and olive oil, seasonings from the family's Greek heritage. Steaks are available individually or paired with shrimp or crab for an additional depth of flavor. Entrees also come with either soup or salad. The attentive service and relaxing atmosphere ensure that you'll always feel comfortable.

HAYWOOD ROAD. Open since 1998, this contemporary steakhouse sports a rustic interior of wood and stone. Peppered with Native American accents, the dining room features a large fireplace and original artwork depicting historical scenes of Greenville. One of the house specialties is a top-choice porterhouse with blue-cheese pesto. A selection of other cuts will tempt any diner, along with salmon, lamb and trout. Pasta, pot pie, crab cakes and ribs make up the rest of the menu. For a casual atmosphere and hearty food, this place can't be beat. Popular bar, too.

Brick walls, hardwood floors, and a wealth of Texas-related memorabilia set the stage for this easy-going steakhouse. You can choose from pasta, chicken, seafood and ribs, but the real draw is the beef. Filet, T-bone, porterhouse and NY strip are the cuts of choice, and you can have them separate or on a combination plate. All entrees come with a house salad and your choice of starch. Like the state itself, this eatin' is big!

This restaurant has been around for decades, and it maintains its popularity by offering great quality, a relaxing environment and excellent service. The wide-open dining room has a fireplace as its central feature, as the name suggests. Not interested in trends, exotic fare or nouveau cuisine, they stick with the classics, and longstanding patrons appreciate it. Simple salads, thick steaks, big baked potatoes. Stick-to-your-ribs food. An institution.
