1. Caesar's Head State Park

This beautiful park, situated along the top of the Blue Ridge mountains, has scenic trails for hiking, biking and bird watching. A favorite destination is Raven Cliff Falls, a majestic waterfall located two miles from the roadside. Pretty Place Chapel, a rustic stone structure popular for weddings and vespers services, lies in the same vicinity and grants an incredible vista of the landscape.

WEST END. When April rolls around, West End Field' is the most popular spot in town for baseball fans. The city's minor league team, the Greenville Drive, moved into its current digs in 2006, and attendees love the park's inviting atmosphere. The season runs through early September.

3. Jones Gap State Park

Take US 76 west from Cleveland, turn right onto River Falls Road and follow it until it becomes Jones Gap Road. Here, on 3,346 acres, you'll discover extensive nature trails, the Middle Saluda River, camp grounds and the nature exhibits of the Environmental Education Center. For the ambitious, there's also access to the Foothills Hiking Trail.

DOWNTOWN. Learn about what makes South Carolina's Upstate region unique at this impressive museum. Oral histories record experiences of residents who lived in the area during significant periods in the Upstate's history, and there are also some fascinating exhibits.

5. Liberty Bridge & Falls Park on the Reedy

WEST END. The Reedy River isn't huge, but it's a much-loved feature of Greenville residents, especially now that the park around it has been revamped. Manicured plantings, open lawns, and stone pathways and terraces offer plenty to explore, and the Liberty Bridge arcs over and around the falls in a feat of beauty and engineering. The inviting park follows part of the Reedy's course, providing not only picturesque views but a brief history lesson as well, thanks to a series of markers. A great place to take a book or enjoy lunch on a sunny day. Shopping and dining opportunities are nearby too.

6. Bob Jones University Museum & Gallery

NORTH PLEASANTBURG. Located on the campus of Bob Jones University, this museum has one of the best collections of religious art in the nation. Works by Rembrandt, Petri, Rubens, Alemanno and many others are on permanent display. In addition, the museum contains the Bowen Collection of Antiquities which features Egyptian, Roman, and ancient Hebrew artifacts. Modest dress is required and cameras are not allowed. Children under six not permitted. Free admission on Sundays.

7. Peace Center for the Performing Arts

DOWNTOWN. Greenville's premier destination for theater and the arts, the Peace Center hosts numerous headline events including Broadway musicals, concerts and plays and is home to the Greenville Symphony, SC Children's Theatre, Greenville Chorale, International Ballet and Carolina Ballet Theater. Its main concert hall seats 2100 guests, and its smaller venue, the Gunter Theatre, accommodates 400. An outdoor amphitheatre are frequently used for community events.

9. Campbell's Covered Bridge

TIGERVILLE. Built at the turn of the last century, this gabled structure stands as the state's only covered bridge. Its solid construction and picturesque setting attract history buffs and tourists alike, and photographers appreciate its nostalgic flavor. To visit, take US Highway 25 north to State Road 414 through Tigerville. Then turn right onto Pleasant Hill Road and take another right onto Campbell's Bridge Road.

10. Greenville Zoo

DOWNTOWN. Everyone loves the zoo, and this facility in Cleveland Park never fails to please. With hundreds of residents, there's an attraction for everyone, whether it's farm animals or creatures from more exotic backgrounds. The habitats mimic each animal's natural environment, so kids can see how they live in the wild. The reptile collection is perfect for those fascinated by dinosaurs, and Joy the elephant is the well-loved mascot of the zoo.
