  1. Grenoble is the capital of the French Alps and the site of the 1968 Winter Olympics. As the center of the Dauphine region, it serves as an intellectual and economic hub.
  2. Music city and then some! Each year, Grenoble hosts a jazz festival that takes place in March, a rock festival in April and a European theatre festival in June and July.
  3. Need to satisfy your sweet tooth? Noix de Grenoble, a sweet walnut candy and gateau aux noix, a walnut cake, are two local specialties that you'd be nuts not to try!
  4. Navigating Grenoble via automobile can be quite frustrating, particularly because parking spots are few and far between. Most sites of interest are within just a short walking distance from the train and bus stations. So, save yourself some time and headaches ... use the public transportation system!
  5. The Musée Dauphines is housed in a 17th century convent. The museum offers exhibits that display crafts and the history of the Dauphine region, and focus particularly on the way of life of the mountain people.
  6. When it comes to eating, Grenoble exhibits a real international flair! Many local restaurants and bistros offer traditional fare; others offer North African, Chinese and Italian cuisine. You can bet that every palate can be satisfied here!
  7. Looking for a great view? Head to Fort de la Bastille. The fort, built in the 16th century, was renovated in the 19th century and offers the best view of the city!
  8. Surrounded by science! Grenoble is home to the science-oriented University of Grenoble and is also home to chemical and electronic industries and nuclear research.
  9. Grenoble proudly boasts several museums so, if you're a museum fan, this is the city to visit! A Pass Musée entitles you to entry into sixteen museums in and around Grenoble.
  10. Home, sweet home! Stendahl, the author of Le Rouge et le Noir, was born in Grenoble in 1783. Historique-Stendahl traces the life and works of the writer from his birthplace and home to the surrounding areas that provided much of the inspiration for his works.
