Designed in 1796 by noted architect Charles Bullfinch, this house is one of the oldest state houses in the nation. It served as the seat of state government for almost a hundred years until the present Capitol was built. The home has hosted major state and national events, including many visits by dignitaries and celebrities. Oliver Wolcott, signer of the Declaration of Independence, was the first Governor to serve here, and P.T. Barnum served in the legislature here. Dignitaries from Abraham Lincoln to George Bush have delivered speeches in the Great Senate Room.
